SAM Waterston is expected to be "promoted" on "Law & Order" to replace Fred Thompson as the show's resident district attorney.

The beetle-browed Waterston, 66, has played assistant D.A. Jack McCoy on "L&O" since 1992 and is the show's longest running cast member.

The move to make his character the new D.A. was not unexpected - but it still leaves the program with a big slot to fill, Waterston's old job as chief courtroom prosecutor.

Thompson played Manhattan D.A. Arthur Branch for five seasons. He is expected to run for president in 2008.

NBC announced last week that former "Six Feet Under" star Jeremy Sisto will join the show, but as a cop.

The elevation of Waterston is the latest in a string of shakeups on NBC's venerable franchise, which almost went bye-bye after the just completed season.

NBC thought long and hard about renewing "L&O" for an 18th season before finally announcing it would return to the schedule in mid-season - with "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" moving over to sister cable network USA.

"Law & Order: SVU" was renewed earlier last season and will return this fall to NBC.

That should be interesting...and actually, SW began on Law & Order in the 1994-95 season. Michael Moriarty played EADA Ben Stone from the show's debut in 1990 until 1994.

I wonder who will be the new EADA???

I hope all these shakeups help and not further hinder the ratings....

I think Jack deserves the promotion, finally! It will be interesting to see how they handle this on the show tho, cause the DA's job is an elected position and Jack HATED the politics of the job, as he has stated on more than one occasion on the show! LOL
