'Sopranos' hit parade gets fans in step again - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

'Sopranos" fans reacted to Sunday's bloody episode with a mix of shock, because of the body count, and sadness, because the show is nearly over.

"I don't even know what to say," wrote one fan at HBO's Web site. "The show just raced by ... it felt like it was 10 minutes long! I have no clue what to expect now."

Sunday's episode was the eighth in the nine-episode final run of the critically lauded drama about New Jersey mobsters.

After a season that seemed to be spent tying up some - but not all - loose ends, Sunday's show crackled with the killing of one Soprano lieutenant and mortal wounds to another. It shocked viewers back into the reality that these characters represent some really bad people.

"I was totally bummed when they both got shot. It was heartbreaking, in a way. I know they're criminals, but we did get attached to them over seven years," wrote one fan.

"I have to admit, I'd been losing interest in the show for a long time," wrote a viewer at HBO.com. "I was only watching 'cause I had so much time invested. This episode brought my interest back."

Indeed, some viewers had grown weary of the show, and for much of this season, ratings slipped each week, and were well behind those of past seasons. Recently, there has been something of an uptick.

"That could have just been the best episode ever! Man that kicked a-," wrote a viewer.

But not all viewers were in love with Sunday's show.

"This is becoming the biggest disappointment ever," wrote one viewer, a fan who was upset with the way Dr. Jennifer Melfi dumped Tony Soprano as a client and with the show's portrayal of Tony's son A.J. as weak. "It's just not compelling at all. What could possibly be good about the show at this point?"

Still, despite some naysayers, the consensus on fan boards was positive going into the final week.

"I think I just began breathing again," wrote a viewer on www.televisionwithoutpity.com.

"This episode killed me," added another at the site. "I don't want Tony to die!"

The final episode airs Sunday at 9 p.m.
