The song was written and first performed by Andrew Gold in the late 1970s. Cynthia Fee sang the song when it was used as The Golden Girls theme. I have both versions on CD.

Trivia: Andrew Gold is the son of Marni Nixon, who dubbed the singing voices of Natalie Wood (West Side Story), Audrey Hepburn (My Fair Lady), and Deborah Kerr (The King & I).

IMO, the best sitcom of the 80s, and the theme song and photos are the icing on the cake!

Heart LOVE it!

I absolutely love "Thank you for Being a Friend". I only recently heard the version from Andrew Gold after he passed away in 2011. I viewed a youtube live version where he sang the full-length of the song and it made me appreciate the song more! Even from the first few notes it's a happy song

Interesting info about Andrew Gold being the son of Marni Nixon. I was a huge fan of Broadway musicals in my youth, so I was familiar with her work. She had an absolutely gorgeous voice.

I was also a Natalie Wood fan. Marnie dubbed her voice in West Side Story, but Natalie was allowed to do her own singing in Gypsy the following year, because the vocals were less challenging.

Andrew Gold was also a regular collaborator with Linda Ronstadt.

One of the cds my aunt gave me is a singer/songwriters of the 70's cd and it just happened to have the original Andrew Gold version of Thank You For Being A Friend and when my mom and I heard it my mom was surprised that it was The Golden Girls theme song and it is such a wonderful song about friendship and it's great that Cynthia Fee covered it for The Golden Girls. Andrew Gold is no longer living but the theme to The Golden Girls is one of his best hits and the tune that all sitcom fans like
