Did Gloria respect Archie? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Did Gloria have any respect for Archie? She talked terrible to him, stuck her tongue out at him, and hit him on occasion. Yes, his views on various matters were misguided, but there was enough evidence that Archie had been a decent father to her. Gloria seemed somewhat spoiled and was in no way afraid of Archie. Do you think he ever disciplined her in a real way when she was little?

She was daddy's little girl, so she got away with alot. And she was kind of a chip off the old block, don't you think?

She definitely was a chip off the old block. She could be very stubborn and irrational at times, like Archie.

It didn't seem like she respected him to me. Like you said JRDM, she was always hitting him or sticking her tongue out at him.

The reason why I think she acted that way towards him is because she knew Archie was an ass and a bigot. He still was her father and she should have shown a little bit more gratitude, even if he didn't deserve any.

No she didn't respect him- love and care, yes, respect as an authority figure- no way. I don't think she respected Edith either.

No, because she at times told edith to stand up to Archie. And there was another time she told Edith that she was a nobody.

A strong case can be made that a daughter raised to be Daddy's sweet little girl-- and was so during her early years-- but eventually proved to be stubborn and strong-willed, and very politically liberal compared to her reactionary father... that she does indeed respect her father, and as time goes by it is shown more and more. But it's not Gloria and Archie I meant in particular here-- it's my sister and my dad. My dad was a Texas version of Archie Bunker-- he believed the sterotypes he had always heard, he was a WWII veteran (with a purple heart) and worked a blue-collar job, and always had his mind made up and it was almost impossible to get him to accept new ideas. So my sister had some good reasons to become the 'hippie' type and talk back to our parents (our mom somewhat compared to Edith, too) and reject bigotry. But she admitted-- tacitly, for the most part, but also in conversation and letters-- that she often went too far and was sorry her becoming her own person with her own values came off like disrespect. Most people, of course, do mellow a bit as they continue to mature and realize they could not change the world nearly as easily as they thought. I tend to think Gloria's case would be quite similar.

No, I don't think Edith would have let that happen. There were times when she could be really tough and outspoken about what she believed in.

No she did not respect Archie nor Edith. Anytime you tell a parent that they are narrow minded and stupid like she in the episode Battle of the Month that would had been grounds to be thrown out. Archie should had asked Gloria to move out when she went there.

When she flat out told Edith in that same episode she was a nothing in her marriage to Archie that is the equivalant of a child telling a parent, "I hate you." In real life when Gloria got on a terror on that episode, Battle of the Month, she would had been put out. Yes, Archie was an idiot in his views and attitude but still that is her father.

But in those tender moments with Archie and Gloria were powerful and realistic to a point it was like watching in on their time as father and daughter. There were some of those I was in tears.

I would have to disagree. Every mother I have ever known who compares to Edith-- kindhearted, self-sacrificing, fair even with an unfair husband-- did spank her children and didn't protest-- much-- if her husband did. In the end she may have cried more than Gloria, but virtually all kids are at times brats who "challenge" their parents, and that is the time I think it is an acceptable form of discipline, and so did the mothers to which I referred.

She realized she was wrong and apologized to Edith. If she never apologized then she wouldn't have had any respect.
