Default Paul McCartney: Disappointed Working with Others after John Lennon's Death

Talking about the special magic that he and John Lennon had when working together, Paul McCartney said that working with others is always disappointing in comparison. That's quite a statement when considering some of the former duets he's done in the past with the likes of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.

McCartney said, "It's a funny subject the collaboration thing (is) because I collaborated with John and you're a little bit spoiled after that. That was one hell of a collaboration. I've done it quite a bit since and, I think - and I hate to say it - there's inevitably a sense of disappointment because it was just so cool for John and me to be working together, because we started so young and knew each other's ways and minds."

He added that it's a lot harder to make it happen with others in contrast to the smoothness he experienced with John.

Watching Paul working after John's death, it does seem like there is something missing from him that never has come back.

I found it both surprising and not surprising. I mean Lennon was a legend, but he worked with so many other greats.

True, I think Paul is having a lot of reflections that I think a lot of people go through. I mean it is just Paul and Ringo, and it was Paul and John there were there from the beginning. I just saw "A Hard Day's Night," and they just seemed so young and had such a great time. I think if John had lived both he and Paul would eventually have gotten back together in some form.

Can't say that I'm shocked. His collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Jackson were disappointing to say the least. "Say Say Say" and "Ebony and Ivory" were awful and one has to wonder what those guys were smoking when they decided to write that crap.

What about the music video for "Say Say Say"? I believe it was voted one of the worst music videos of all time. I can't even listen to that song without thinking about that video.

Exactly. My man John was a master. Once you have caught lightening in a bottle, you shouldn't expect to have it again.

No, I think The video Journey did for "Separate Ways" is the worst music video ever. Love the song, hate the video.

Lennon/McCartney is the most famous songwriting duo in pop music history. After you've worked with the best, anything else is going to be a bit of a letdown. I hear that after being estranged for years, the two were finally starting to make amends shorty before John was killed. I read somewhere that he really liked Paul's then-current single, "Coming Up".

I'm with you on this one, Justin. Those are two truly awful songs. Especially "Ebony and Ivory".

Come on, you know you get teary-eyed (tears of joy, no less) when you hear "Ebony and Ivory" and I bet you blare the crap outta your radio when you hear "Say Say Say" - it's ok to admit it.
