I agree with you, I have always hated R/R. They have no chemistry and are completely mismatched and boring and their getting back together at the end of the show was completely OOC.

for me, it's not the fact that they were the show's main couple, as all sitcoms each have a couple eg, frasier- daphne and niles, caroline in the city- caroline and richard, dharma and greg- um, dharma and greg, i love lucy- lucy and ricky ricardo to name but many, but rather a lot of hype had been made about those two. if ross and rachel were played by two different actors, as opposed to david schwimmer and jennifer aniston would people's perception of those two characters be different? most certainly. and also the way they got back together towards the end of the series and of the 10th season was almost so cliched, it was predictable. i'm sorry to all you friends fans out there but to me ross and rachel had no personality whatsoever; they were just dull

Ross & Rachel was cliched, but only, imo, because so many sitcoms after the rise of Friends try to copy that same formula. It worked with Friends, but it isn't going to work with everything.

well, it may have worked with friends, but i just never bought into that relationship myself. personally, i didn't see what was so special about them in the first place. there was too much hype surrounding ross and rachel that i wasn't a fan of that couple in the slightest

Would you have been a fan or not cared if there was no hype?

I don't think R/R worked at all. Chandler & Monica are a much better couple.

in the context of that question, no. the thing is though that there are a couple of sitcom couples, of whom i feel have that spark and attraction.
there has to be something about them that makes them tick and stand out from the others, and yet for me ross and rachel are not that couple. for me, i just feel that there is no substance between those two. besides, hype or no hype i don't buy into every positive comment people have said about ross and rachel and unlike other people, they may have had chemistry but personality-wise they were too similar to each other in many ways. i'm not saying that it is a bad thing in itself, but when you look at the majority of sitcom couples- be it married or as boyfriend/girlfriend, what makes those ones interesting are the fact that the two people involved are different, though not too different to each other in terms of character and their personalities. and yet despite those differences, they prove it is possible that two people can love each other, regardless. ross and rachel however- despite rachel being born in a rich family and ross was a geek, were too similar that i found their romance to be too schmaltzy for my liking

Ross and Rachel made no sense because honestly, can you see Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer being together in real life?? Pretty girl and geek, ok, but they were ridiculous.

I enjoyed Monica and Chandler more than Ross and Rachel. R&R had their moments, but I would hardly call them one of the best couples EVER.

I also thought that Ross and Rachel were overrated. There relationship was more expected because Ross liked her from the beginging. With Chandler and Monica, you didn't expect it and it was more of a surprise and I liked that. I just think they are a better couple too. Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox are my favorite on the show anyway.

I do like how Ross and Rachel got back together in the end though.

yeah, it's a really good point that you have made here: in that with ross and rachel their relationship had a lot of history and the fact that they were seeing each other when they were younger, meant you knew the fate of that couple in the end. they were so-called childhood/teenage sweethearts. but as i mentioned, ross and rachel would never have got that much attention, and neither would they have been seen as the show's main couple- if those characters were played by a different actor and actress because a) they would bring different qualities to those characters and b) the way they would've performed on screen as ross and rachel, would've been much different to david and jennifer's ross and rachel, which in effect, means the audience's perception of that couple would be so much different

But even though Ross liked Rachel, her reciprocating makes no sense. He's a loser, she'd never be interested and they have no chemistry. She made more sense with Joey.

yeah, i suppose that in real life, rachel would never settle down with a guy like ross- he's too geeky and often she can be so full of herself
