Default Jordin Sparks: the best voice since Kelly Clarkson

America finally regained its sanity by crowning the best singer left standing - Jordin Sparks - after going batty the week before and kicking Melissa Doolittle to the curb.

Of course, in an ideal world, Doolittle would have been the one on that stage last night, feigning shock at her good fortune and choking back the tears.

Instead, voters had to choose between Sparks (a talented and precocious 17-year-old), and Blake Lewis (an earnest crooner with annoying hip-hop pretensions).

During this exhaustive competition, neither Sparks nor Lewis ever hit the soaring heights of Doolittle (or of LaKisha Jones, for that matter). But Sparks showed the most steady and measurable improvement, going from perky but unsure to stalwart and mature.

The good news is: Among all "A.I." winners, Sparks rates as the most full-voiced singer since the contest's first queen, Kelly Clarkson. She also has a far more contemporary sound than the last top dog, the older-skewing Taylor Hicks.

Let's just hope that whatever sound music executives hone for her on CD ends up as winning as Sparks' performance these last few weeks on TV.

I think Carrie Underwood has a much better voice than Jordin.

i love Jordin, but Carrie definitley has a better voice. Jordin would be 3rd though. and Katharine McPhee would be 4th.

I think Melinda Doolittle is one of the best singers Idol's ever seen too. I can't believe people are leaving her out (Myself included till I thought of it now, LOL). She's been almost flawless each week, even more so than Carrie, Kat, and Jordin (Can't talk about Kelly since I haven't seen season 1). But she isn't a looker and doesn't have that 'it' factor I guess, so I can understand why people tend to leave her out.

I think Jordin is better than Kelly Clarkson. Better pure singer, if you ask me. Kelly's voice is often strained when she really belts out a song, it's natural for Jordin.

Agreed...I think she's unerrated because she lacks that "star power."

i don't really care for Melinda's voice to be honest. i mean she's a really good singer...but i just don't like her style of singing.

Jordin gets really shrieky sometimes but I see what you mean about Kelly. Especially after hearing her sing Never Again at the finale. I love her...but ick.

She didn't sound THAT bad on AI. I think her best performance of the song was on David Letterman
