Default The Petty Jealousy of Sarah Carter

I don't usually like the later episodes with the Carters, but I watched the one today and it pissed me off. It was "The Last Summer," where Jason worked for and became friends with an older lady, Ruthie. Sarah became so jealous of Jason's and Ruthie's relationship she rejected the cameo Jason gave her for her birthday because he got it from Ruthie.

What a selfish b*tch! She crushed her own son and treated Ruthie like crap. I never really liked Sarah and this episode just added to my negative attitude toward her.

It was a touching episode about a special relationship between an innocent, young boy and a generous, grandmother type who was living her last summer.

Get a grip, Sarah! pissed:

I so love the activity you have given the LHOTP board. Thanx for liven it up!

I have seen this episode maybe only twice. I couldn't really get into the post Charles and Caroline years. I recall it somewhat, but I know enough abt it to agree with you. It was petty jealousy. No reason whatsoever for her to get that way at all.

Thanks, Irene! Since I work evenings, I watch 3-4 episodes a day (usually while I'm doing stuff around the house) and also several Roseannes.

It's so funny, Pam Roylance is the total opposite. I got to meet her at the 2005 Tombstone Film Festival, where most of the cast gathered. She and Stan Ivar (John Carter) introduced a New Beginning episode in the screening room. It was the one where Sarah's father comes to town and tries to get them to move away with him.

Here's a fun story: The cast was assembled at a Q&A period. Both Stan Ivar and Pam Roylance were single when they began playing husband and wife. His parents came to the set one day and said, "Why don't you go out with her? She's a nice girl" after meeting Ms. Roylance. They never got together but have remained close friends to this day.

I have another story to share about Stan Ivar...what a gentleman he is. I'll post it separately.

True, but Sarah didn't know that at the beginning. All she knew was that there was this rich woman whom her son adored and who could do things with him(quality time) because Ruthie didn't really have any obligations in her life, like chores, a job, and what-not, because she had a helper to do those things and money to buy whatever else she wanted.
So, yeah, Sarah may have felt a little jealous about that.

We know Sarah didn't really have a cause for concern about the relationship between Jason and Ruthie, because we could watch their friendship develop. But Sarah didn't have that luxury. So she may have been a little over-protective as well.

But Sarah did change her tune once she found out that Ruthie was dying and that Jason was adding some joy to her life in her last days. So I can't really fault her too much.

Okay, so I will lighten up on Sarah's petty jealousy.

I saw this episode again today. I was really bugged at how Sarah, and then John rejected the birthday gift from Jason.

A real mother would accept and cherish any gift from a child, from a macaroni necklace to a diamond tiara.

The look on Jason's face after his own mother rejected his hard-earned gift brought tears to my eyes.

Cool Agree!

I agree Sarah's attitude really s*cked in this episode. At least, in the
beginning. She should've known that Jason loves her more than he did
Ruthie. Finally, towards the end, she relents. However, I think it's sad
that it took the news of Ruthie's terminal illness to get her to change her
mind. This is actually one of my least fav episodes.

I was like "chill out lady". I could not believe that she was acting like that. Get a grip, Sarah. At least we got to see another side of her character.
