Default The episode where Lucy makes this comment...

Lucy to Ethel: "By the way, is it true your father drinks goats milk?"

For the life of me right now, I can't remember the episode, but it's a scene with Ethel and Lucy only and I believe Lucy is trying to help Ethel in a costume.

Anyhow, why would Lucy's character state a line like that and not get a response from Ethel? Was it just set up as a joke with no real response? It didn't make sense unless it was an "inside" joke of some sort.

Good memory, my friend! Lucy said it when she was helping Ethel into the hind end of a horse costume in "The Benefit," (season one). Ethel didn't really respond to it. I think it was just a line to fill the time when Ethel was getting into the costume. Ethel's next line was "I only hope this fits a horse better than it does me!"

The real crack-up of that scene is when Lucy says "I defy anybody to recognize you," then Fred walks in and says "Hi Lucy, I got something for you." Lucy says "Oh Hello, Fred." Then he looks at the bent over horse's rear end and says "Hello, Ethel."

Ah yes, the horse costume. I could see it in my head now. Thanx to you.

I know, Fred making those little cracks like that are one reason ILL is one of the best comedy shows ever, if not the best. In my eyes THE BEST.

Oh yea!

How about in the episode where the girls dress up as men and wear moustaches and everything. They then go to the bar the boys are at to spy on them. So in the end the boys find out that it's Lucy and Ethel. Lucy asks Ricky how he knew it was her and he explains and then Ethel asks Fred:

Ethel: "Fred how'd you see through my disguise?"
Fred: "What disguise?"

My mom had her mouth open at that one. She couldn't believe it.

My fave is when Lucy wears the italian wig and Ethel wears that hideous outfit where she is an eskimo, a japanese geisha girl and an american indian...

Lucy to Ethel: "You look like an ad for a trip around the world." That look on her face when she says it all... That scene gets me everytime!!!

Also in this same episode, Fred also recognizes Ethel when in the early scene she is the one wearing that italian wig and tries to "seduce" Fred.

Yeah, Ethel is standing by the fireplace ready to "seduce" Fred, positive he won't recognize her. He walks in and says "Hi Lucy. Which sink is it?" and then as he walks by, "Hi Ethel." She is deflated.

Then on the way out:
Fred: "Ethel why don't you take off that silly-looking toupee?"
Ethel: "This is that new Italian haircut!"
Fred: "Well on you it looks like life with Luigi."

That outfit poor Ethel had to wear was utterly ridiculous and brilliant writing. When she takes off the coat it is even worse! I am laughing just thinking of it!

I know, when I was making my post above, I had that image in my head and seeing Ethel dressed that way was sooooo terrible. Poor Ethel.

I tell ya, when I see that scene it cracks me up just like the first time I seen it...abt 35 years ago.
