Default Oprah Winfrey Stunned by Her Dad's Tell-All Book

TV host Oprah Winfrey is "shocked" and "disappointed" her father is writing a tell-all book about her.

The talk-show queen was stunned when the New York Daily News recently reported that 74-year-old Vernon was planning to write a book on his daughter--and she refused to believe it at first.

She says, "One of my assistants said, 'The Daily News is calling. They say they heard your father is writing a book about you.' I said, 'That's impossible. I can assure them it's not true.'

"But then my sister said, 'I think you should call your father.' I called him and it turned out he is writing a book. The worst part of it was him saying, 'I meant to tell you I've been working on it.'

"I was upset. I won't say devastated, but I was stunned. The last person in the world to be doing a book about me is Vernon Winfrey."

Oprah admits she hasn't seen her father since their trip to Africa a few months ago, but says, "We talk, we talk, we talk. I would have preferred to have known my father was working on this. It would have been a nice gesture, a courtesy."

I think it is rude and idiotic that a father didn't discuss with his daughter, whether she is famous or not, that he is writing a book abt her. Sounds like someone flashed some $$$ at him and that is his goal. No different than the family of Anna Nicole.

Oprah has been forthright abt 99 percent of her life, good and bad. She knew when she was the most recognized woman in America it came with those long ago secrets. There are even secrets she revealed that no one would have known abt, but Oprah, out of the goodness of her heart and the fact that she wants people to know she has had a bad childhood and so forth, she did it hoping it would inspire others to face their demons, their skeletons or whatever may be troubling them.

Also, Oprah's father didn't play much role in her life, if I remember correctly, so this is a slap in the face to Oprah and those who did play a major part in her life. Being a sperm donor does NOT a father make.

I guess Oprah should have given dear old Dad a bigger check at Christmas time.

Cool

That's rude. Her dad should've told her that he was writing a book on her.

Oprah's dad did raise her from the time when she was like 12 till college. I believe he was in the army when she was small so that's why she was raised by her grandmother. Also I believe that her mother didn't really raise her so it was her mom who didn't play a big part in her life.

It still sucks that a persons parent would write a tell all book about their own kid.

Thank you for clarifying that. I know that Oprah didn't have her dad around when she was young, but I couldn't remember why. I know she too had been raped and became impregnated by a family member. That child was stillborn. To me, what Oprah has revealed to the world, she did so for a reason.

It's been stated her father is going to reveal "deep dark secrets" of a girl gone wild as a teen...going out with all kinds of boys and making herself "available" readily easily...NOW WHAT KIND OF FATHER WOULD SAY SUCH THINGS ABT HIS DAUGHTER???? Especially a daughter who made something out of herself and has become one of the world's richest people...especially a black woman!!!!!!!!!! He should be proud, not being disloyal to her like that.

I totally agree, I think Oprah revealed just about everything about her teen years and childhood to avoid family members from writing tell all books and talking to the press.

But I'm going to sit back and wait and see if anything become of this. You know you can't trust everything that the press says.

It's a free country, and if Papa Winfrey wants to pen a book, I say go for it.

It's bad when you do that to your flesh and blood. Just don't do that to family.

The article doesn't state that he's going to trash her. It could be a work of love. If someone, anyone, wants to write a book, it's their right. Maybe Oprah can have it in her book of the month or whatever that thing is she does. She doesn't own the world. Makes me wonder what she fears coming to light. Maybe there's another version besides Ms. Wonderful's.

Exactly - nobody has said he plans on trashing her in the book. It's Oprah's reaction to the news that makes me wonder if there aren't any more "secrets".

I used to really like Oprah - until that incident in Paris where she expected Hermes to stay open for her and her entourage. Unfortunately, the fame and money finally caught up to her (albeit, it did seem to take longer than with most celebs) but I think Oprah thinks she's above everyone else. It knocked her down a few notches in my book. Even with her charities in Africa I find her a little obnoxious. A lot of other celebrities have had things built or donated huge sums of money to causes all over the world, but they don't showcase them in the magazines or on t.v. like she does. It's almost as though it means more to her to be able to say, "look at the wonderful things I'm doing for these poor girls" than the actual charity itself.
Fine to give, but keep a lower profile. And if you have nothing more to "hide" or rotten in your background, then why be nervous dad's wanting to write a book?!?!

Oprah made it clear on her show that the Paris incident was not what the tabloids made it out to be. I won't go into details, but it was cleared up. The operative word here is "tabloid"...seems for awhile now that the regular press picks up these supposed stories and publishes them as "news" when in fact, it is just gossip and rumors, much like the NY Post and their supposed "news" abt Rosie and the ladies on the View.

A father should not write a book on their child, without talking to them abt it FIRST. How could he not at least make some effort to contact her? That is the worst part of this whole thing. Famous or not, family should not do that. He is no better than the so-called family of Anna Nicole. I seem to remember the anger expressed on this board abt her half-sister who wrote a book abt Anna. That is no different. I hated Anna's sister for doing that and I hate the fact that Oprah's father is seeking $$$ (it is obvious) rather than be a proud father of a successful daughter. Family doesn't do that to family. I don't care abt anyone's skeletons or supposed skeletons.

But much like your point Irene, who's to say that the media/press/tabloids didn't beat her father to it. In other words, maybe he was going to contact her, setup a dinner or something or even just a telephone call to discuss it but Oprah got word of it first.

Funny, I was certain that it was a rep from Hermes that first reported the incident. That's why it was believable since why would they want to alienate a good customer if it wasn't true.

The article clearly states above that Oprah's dad stated "I meant to call you...I am writing a book...". He already is in the process of writing it. He is not considering writing it, he is already doing it.

Then again, it is WORLD ENTERTAINMENT NEWS, what credibility do they have? I am not sure. We will have to wait and see
