Default Anyone else following the case of missing 4 year old Maddy McCann?

The missing child who was kidnapped from her parents hotel room while they went out to eat... I do hope she is found safe and sound. However, I am pissed that these parents found it reasonable and safe to leave a 4 year old alone with 2 smaller siblings IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY! WTF were they thinking? They weren't thinking! F**king idiots. What I find disheartening is that hundreds of children go missing or are abducted (throught no fault of the parents) and they don't get the publicity, the concern, the financial backing of celebrities, millionaires, a $5 million dollar reward, etc.

Mr and Mrs McCann made an emotional appeal for information
Police investigating the disappearance of a three-year-old British girl from a Portuguese holiday resort say it appears she has been abducted.
Officers say they have a suspect in mind, and believe Madeleine McCann remains in the area and is still alive.

Her parents, from Leicestershire, left her at their apartment at Mark Warner's Ocean Club in Praia da Luz on Thursday, while they were at a nearby restaurant.

Doctors Gerry and Kate McCann have spoken of their "anguish and despair".

In the first official briefing on the case, Guilhermino Encarnacao, director of the judicial police in the Faro region, said officers are working on the assumption she is being held between 3km and 5km (1.8 and 3.1 miles) from the resort.

They had about 30 calls from potential witnesses and have created an artist's impression of a suspect.

Responding to criticism that the police had been slow to respond, Mr Encarnacao said officers arrived at the scene 10 minutes after being alerted to the disappearance.

An investigation unit began work within 30 minutes, he added.

Police are expected to provide a further update on their investigation later.

Relatives have flown to the Algarve to be with the couple, who were holidaying with their three children.

Madeleine disappeared while her parents were at a nearby restaurant

Speaking to press on Friday evening, Mr and Mrs McCann, from Rothley, pleaded for the return of their "beautiful" Madeleine.

Mr McCann, with his wife at his side, read out an emotional statement outside the holiday apartments on Friday evening.

"We cannot describe the anguish and despair we are feeling as parents of our beautiful daughter Madeleine," he said.

"We request that anyone with any information relating to Madeleine's disappearance, no matter how trivial, contact the Portuguese police and help us get her back safely."

The Ocean Club resort offered a creche service but the couple decided to leave Madeleine and two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie sleeping in the apartment.

They had taken turns to return from the restaurant to check on their children.

Madeleine, was last seen by her father at about 9:00pm.

When Mrs McCann went to check on her about an hour later, she found the bedroom's outside shutter and window had been opened and her daughter missing.

Resort staff and guests helped the McCanns search the complex grounds into Friday morning and police were notified.

Pictures of Madeleine have been widely distributed, and ports and the Spanish police put on alert.

British Ambassador John Buck, who is with the McCanns in the Algarve, said they have been joined by three Family Liaison Officers from Leicestershire Police.

Mr McCann's sister Philomena, criticised the Portuguese police for initially "playing down" their response to the disappearance.

She has been in phone contact with her brother.

Speaking from her home in Glasgow, she said: "He thinks it's just too little, too late.

"It was hours before the local police turned up and we're talking two bobbies that totally downplayed the incident and said that Maddie had maybe just wandered off."

However, she said that the family was elated to hear the police believed Madeleine was still alive.

"There was a distinct feeling of elation, you know - but it's been a while since we actually heard it and it's really important to keep your emotions in check," she said.

The Mayor of Lagos, Julio Barraso, defended the police from accusations that they had been too slow to act.

He told BBC News 24: "During all the night of Thursday until Friday they have been here and they started the investigation and I believe that humanly it's not possible to ask for more

EXACTLY! there's no way in the world I would leave my 3yr old and my 1yr old in a hotel room alone while my husband and I go eat dinner. I know that hotel had to have had room service or they could have taken their kids with them. I don't understand some peoples logic in thinking.

But yeah I saw her picture on the cover of People Mag and heard about the story on CNN. But the news really haven't covered the story at all.

I just finished reading the story in PEOPLE mag and it says that the reason the parents didn't use an adult or some type of babysitter for the kids was because they had those kids through in-vitro fertilization and they felt they could trust NO ONE. WTF??? What does having kids through any means have to do with trust? And if your kids mean that much to you that you want to protect them and can't trust no one, then YOU TAKE YOUR KIDS WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES.

That is so sad. Those parents should be knocked in the head.

It goes to show you that some people shouldn't reproduce

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life. Also I really hope that they find the little girl alive and well. And if they do they should take their kids away from them. This shows people that this isn't the first time that they've left their kids alone by themselves. It's totally inconceivable why someone would leave infants and toddlers alone.

i must say that being from the UK myself, the press attention given to this story is incredible. but at the same time perposterous. i mean, don't get me wrong what has happened is awful, but the way the media have hyped up this story is absurd. there are kids all over the world, in america especially i'm sure, whose kids have been kidnapped and snatched from their family. and so therefore i don't see why this one situation involving maddie mccann should be treated any differently to others by the news media. it has gone beyond being out of control. i hope she is found, but at the same time i do feel that this has been in the headlines for too long a time and the way the british press has approached it for me personally has been nothing short of desperate and bordering on the obsessive

Interesting post. I think you nailed it right on the head. You are so right. It seems almost obsessive.

yes, i am glad i am not the only one who feels this way. it's terrible for any family to lose a child and of course the media want to do all they can to highlight this situation. but there are those in the media who wish to continue shoving these things in our faces and rather help, assist or inform the public there are journalists who have nothing better to do do it because it makes front page headlines and react as if it is that much of a deal. and anyway, to further add to the comments i posted earlier british and american troops are out in iraq and afghanistan fighting and risking their lives, with more and more dying every week. and yet with madeline mccann, it's 48+ hour over exposure has gone to overkill.

enough already, just let the cops do their jobs and allow the media attention to settle down, that's what i'd say. as for the parents, it smacks of hypocrasy for them to leave their child without supervision, only for her to be declared missing- and yet those parents go on national tv in front of the world's media and attempt to paint themselves this image that they are innocent and making all types of sob stories, in their attempts to gain people's sympathy. it cannot get any desperate than that- and yet it is nothing short of disgusting. if and when maddie is found, i hope someone has the sense to take the parents to court because they should be deemed unfit to have kids. i have no sympathy towards maddie's parents

I hope she's found asap....but I find it hard to feel sorry for the parents when this whole thing is their ****ing fault. If they would have been smart enough to know that you don't leave a 4 year old alone with her 2 year old siblings, this whole situation could have been avoided. What the **** were they thinking?

You all are saying the right things. Everyone who has posted here so far seems to feel the same as most people. Yes, please find Maddy. However, those parents WERE ASKING FOR THAT TO HAPPEN!!!!

Like Brie said above, if they left them alone this time, imagine how many other times they left them alone in the privacy of their own home or elsewhere?

those parents are total dumb arses anyway, they probably want to lap up any symphathy and attention that they want to crave and get, as well as to use to publicise themselves. any sane parent would never abandon or leave their child on their own and without supervision. what a sad world we are living in today, particuarly when there are so many irresponsible, naive and ignorant numbskulls around

I want to hear the outrage. I want to hear the world say WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING??????

Something tells me that if this had been a couple that wasn't "WHITE" and NOT have money, we would not be hearing all this sympathy, rather, we would be hearing people scream for blood!

the lynchmob would be after them as well as hurl all sorts of abuse. the race issue is another matter altogether, but the fact that this family have courted so much attention, whilst they and others have failed to acknowledge that this problem doesn't just happen to them but to other families as well is indeed shameful. the problem we have though in the UK is when cases such as children going AWOL occur, the tabloids go into meltdown and the parents often behave in such overdramatic ways, it's unbelievable. and yet, the words 'attention seeking misfits' to describe the mccann parents spring to mind.

as for people saying 'my thoughts, prayers and sympathies go to the parents'- no, if anyone deserves that it's maddie- and screw the lame brained mother and father
