I was watching the View today and Rosie mentioned she has a joint account along with Elisabeth, but Joy and Barbara said they had seperate accounts. So just wondering what do you all think?
I would prefer having my own account if I was married, wouldn't matter to me if she had her own account |

I had my own bank account when we got married so I decided to keep it. My husband had an account at a different bank, so he kept his. It works out fine for us.

Well, I've seen both sides of it. For most married couples having a joint account works out fine.
BUT If there is one partner that is just not as reliable with money, he/she can not only get into trouble, they can really get both of you in trouble. We had a guy that was a regular customer, good credit, blah blah... well his wife had some kind of breakdown and started stealing checks and bouncing items all over the place. Because they had a joint account, we had to report both of them to chexsystems, making it very difficult for either of them to ever open another bank account anywhere, or get approved for a loan. It's safer to have 2 accounts, because if (God forbid) someone screws something up or their credit gets really bad, then at least you have the other one and you don't have both partners with bad credit. There's your banker's thought for the day

I have my own account my husband doesn't, he's just lazy I think. And we have a joint account. But I manage the money so it really doesn't matter.

I think it's fine. I'd prefer that my husband NOT be able to touch my money. I don't trust anyone not to go buy something I think is stupid or frivolous. Aren't I nice? lol
If I had a joint account, I'd want total control over it. |

I think it's fine, as long as both spouses agree to it.

I handle all our money. My husband is a terrific guy, but he's totally irresponsible with money. We almost ended up in divorce court twice over it. Once, back in 1996, when I found out he had maxed out his credit cards out to about a zillion dollars. He treated them like Monopoly money. Like Liza said, it affected me too, and I've always been very responsible with money.
We worked through it, and he regained my trust...until 2004 when I found out he was lending money to everyone and their mother. He's a sucker for a sob story, with relatives mostly. Today, he has no credit cards and no bank accounts, and he NEVER will again. He gets a generous allowance and anything else he wants. All he has to do is ask. He uses my debit card if he goes shopping online or in stores. He's not denied anything, except the ability to give our money away to other people. We're both enrolled in a program that monitors for identity theft, and we get our credit reports mailed to us every six months. I look at them very closely, lol. I told him that you reap what you sow. He earned this. He couldn't get a library card now.
