Default Problem w/Brakes

I had new brakes put in my car barely 14 months and 9,000 miles ago. Now they are grinding, scraping, etc. This shouldn't be happening so soon after having them put in, should they?? I don't think so. Who else has had this problem??

You might just need new break pads.

They should have lasted longer than that. I had new brakes put on mine 4 or 5 years ago and they're still doing fine. You'll need to get it checked out though, you don't want to be going down the road and have your brakes fail. Thats what happened to me, and its a scarey feeling.

I had a problem with my old car, it was a 2000 Sunfire, The brakes went bad on them and i had to take it to the shop, and after that I sold it lol the car was bad in the winter, ice, exc.. I have a Rav4 now 2002 it's been an awesome car so far.., I would take it back to the shop and have them loo it over for you see what the problem is, yanno? Good Luck.

You should get at least 18000 miles out of front brakes depending how you drive. You might have something else wrong causing the premature brake wear, or who ever did your brakes the first time used cheapie parts.

I found out that its the rear brakes having problems. First thing in the morning, I'm going to call my car dealer. They're the ones who put those brakes in. Thank you everyone for your insight.

When you had your brakes done the first time, did they change the rear ones? Those wear a lot more slowly than the front, so you can go longer between replacements. If they didn't, then this makes perfect sense.

Hmm, infact, my brakes are chirping...they may very well be the rear ones. Those may be originals, can't remember.

I had the brakes fixed today and I was able to afford it. I can actually stop the car without the brakes grinding and scraping. Thanks again everyone for the advice.

Glad to hear it. Sounds like you might have been ripped off on your first brake job Cat.

I had that happen. Had my brakes and rotors done (or so I thought), however about 4 months later I wanted my tires rotated. The guy had a heck of a time getting the bolts off the wheels and when he did get the tires off, told me my brakes had "cyrstalized". Turns out the creep who had worked on the brakes probably just added padding or something. The proof was in the bolts - they couldn't have been removed previously so the brakes couldn't have been fixed right. Unfortunately the #&*$% who did that had already taken off to Texas. Now I know why! Luckily, nothing bad had happened, but it could have. Now I've got a couple of guys I can trust thankfully.
