Default Anyone own a cat??

Hopefully someone with a cat like mine can answer this.

Whenever I feed my cat and give her fresh water, she smells whats inside and then scratches at the floor as if to cover the food and water. She does this for about a minute then she leaves. Eventually she goes and eats but what I want to know is what's up with the scratching?

Whenever my cat does that, it means he finds whatever he's trying to 'bury' repulsive smelling/looking and won't eat it.

We have 3 cats, and whenever they don't like what is in the water/food dish, they mess up the towel that is underneath the dishes so everything is in disarray. We lowly humans bow to our cats.

I've owned probably about 86 cats in my lifetime (currently have 5). My brown tabby will do that sometimes, and I had a Maine Coon that did it all the time.

That's why ya gotta love 'em - to me, it's basically saying, "I ain't gonna eat this sh*t!"

Cats, unlike dogs are much more particular about their food. A dog will eat anything - including rotting things. Cats won't. If you're ever not sure about leftovers - let the cat sniff a bit. If he goes to eat it, it's o.k, if not - or if they do the "litterbox cover up" routine, it's time to toss it!

My current Maine Coon does the scraping by the water dish (never the food dish tho) and I've never figured that one out myself. He also always has a coughing fit after drinking water. I've asked my vet about it and he's stumped too. Ahhh the mysteries of feline life...

My Maine Coon would also drink from the toilet, but before he'd go into the bowl, he'd wet his front paws with the water, scrape the sides of the bowl and then drink.

Odd little characters aren't they?

My cat does that too sometimes, and one of my friends told me that she does that when she's eaten enough for the time being.

My cat does that every once in a while, its usually when I give him a certian flavor of canned cat food, so I try to remember not to buy that flavor. He doesn't do it with his dry cat food. I've ended up giving our little beagle, the cats rejects. That dog thinks he part cat anyway so he usually eats it.

I have two cats, and one of them does the scratching thing sometimes. Other times, he'll come in the living room with the fur on his chin dripping wet. I'll ask him if he's been swimming in his water dish again, lol.
