The late 20th Century(1970s to 1990s)
That was the time for TV's best sitcoms. |

The 1970s, hands down. They were honest, topical, hilarious and TOTALLY un-PC.
You had some of the best comedy writers of the time: Danny Arnold, Hugh Wilson, James L. Brooks, etc. Then you also had the best decade of ensemble casts (MTM, Bob Newhart Show, Barney Miller, WKRP, Taxi, M*A*S*H, All In The Family, Alice, etc.).

i was born in the 80s and so unfortunately, i haven't been around long enough to give a definitive answer! however, out of the 80s, 90s and 00s, i prefer the 90s because for me, in accordance to the shows which have been around that period, there were a lot of good sitcoms. the 00s though has been a poor decade so far for sitcoms, with only two and a half men making an impression, although everybody hates chris has been a hit as well
00s- two and a half men, everybody hates chris 90s- caroline in the city, frasier, the fresh prince of bel air, seinfeld, third rock from the sun, everybody loves raymond 80s- the cosby show, diff'rent strokes, roseanne |

The '70's was single-handedly the best decade of television ever. Sitcoms included. The '80's goes down for second.

Stop stealing my thoughts. I read somewhere that at one time, CBS had All In The Family, M*A*S*H and Bob Newhart all back to back on the same night. Can you imagine what it must've been like to have watched those great shows first-run back-to-back?? I was around when that happened, but was too young to have known or cared about those shows. Pity. It would be great if TV Land could re-create one of those nights, perhaps with the original commercials and promos. |

I remember Bob Newhart being on in the house when I was a youngin, but I never paid close attention to it. It was too much of an "adult show" for me. Similarly, my Mom loved Barney Miller, but said it was "over my head." I used to grimace and sneer at that remark, but I realize in retrospect she was right. And I didn't really discover M*A*S*H and All In The Family until syndication, but part of the fun was watching them five nights a week in order to catch up. |
