In "The Trouble with Rubbles," when Roseanne meets Kathy Bowman, I love how Roseanne puts that snob into place.

The thing that bothers me is the fact that (my hero) Dan Conner couldn't put in a dishwasher for his wife. Peolple need to realize how important that appliance is in running a household. I lived without one for only two years and it was horrible. Washing dishes is a back-breaking, hand-chafing, waste of time. Especially when women are trying to run a clean household and have to wash and scrub baby bottles and all the accessories, plates, glasses, silverware, pots, pans and whatever else the family throws into the pile.

I can identify with Roseanne's dirty looks towards Dan in this case.

Not only that, but he couldn't build her a spice rack, but he did make one for that house that he help put together for sale that eventually Jackie bought. That was the time that Dan needed financial help and went running to Bev for help. Ohhhh, he could run to Bev for $$$$ but put her down all the other times. Hmmmm......

Remember Roseanne also wanted that bookcase on her wall but Dan said they didn't have the right studs...yeah, right Dan!

These are the ONLY two infractions that could possibly be held against Dan. I think he's the greatest! I wish more guys were like him. And, HE actually IS seen doing the dishes from time to time.

When Dan cheated on Roseanne, that was the end of my thinking he was THE GREATEST GUY. At that point, he blew it big time, so the two "infractions" mentioned above are merely that, infractions. Adultery is the worst thing he could've done to Roseanne. NOT A FORGIVING THING. Why Roseanne didn't beat the crap outta him, slap him, scream at him, etc. is beyond me. So, frankly, I am glad more guys are NOT like Dan. Who wants a man who cheats? I don't.

Well in the end, we find out he never cheated on her....Roseanne made that up, because when he died, she felt as if he cheated.

Well if we go that route, than he never committed any of the other infractions mentioned. However, since at that point in the series, we don't know abt the "dream ending" it is still Dan being a "bad boy".

I was also going to post how he went out to lunch with Phyllis Zimmer, his ex-girlfriend, the one that Roseanne despised so much. That sure doesn't make Dan a good guy either.

EXACTLY! A smart person would know what would happen. Dan was stupid and thoughtless by doing that. The Dan Conner of the earlier seasons would not have done that. By this time during the show, Roseanne and the writers had the characters doing things they would not normally do or react a certain way.

I was so disappointed when they wrote Dan having an affair and then leaving. The real (early) Dan would never have done that. Roseanne's reaction was so cool because I think her mind was blown as was ours. Dan and Roseanne went through so much, it seemed unrealistic that Dan would cheat after all that.

I know. Gimme a break here, that Dan that we all knew from the beginning would not do that to Roseanne and his family. We were seeing a different Dan Conner. It didn't help matters that Roseanne was having her own personal issues in her life and that seemed to play a part in the writing and how the show changed direction.

Another time when the characters seemed "not in tune" was when Roseanne and Dan were having their baby. This should have been a happy time and instead, we were given a selfish, stoned-faced, sarcastic Roseanne.

First you said that Dan cheated on Roseanne, and that is a horrible thing to do. Not incorrect, except he didn't actually cheat on her, which we find out in the last episode.

Then when someone points out that he didn't really cheat on her, you say that using that logic, he never did anything bad because it is a fictional TV show. Fine, the 4th wall is broken down..

Then you say that it was the writers' fault for changing his character to be an adulterer (which, again, he was not.)

I'm not trying to be rude or mean, but you are saying completely different things in each reply. If you are looking at this as a purely "in-character" perspective, then yes, him doing things like not building her a spice rack or getting her a dishwasher was kind of a lousy thing to do. But, I don't think I would consider him cheating on her valid, since he did not cheat on her.

If you look at it as a viewer of a fictional television show, then yes, he cheated on her as far as we know until the final episode. But, it's still the same; we found out that he retroactively never cheated on her because he had in fact passed away.

And if you look at it as an issue of writers doing a bad job, then this thread is completely pointless, because Dan Conner is not a real person, merely a creation of a team of writers and John Goodman.

Again, sorry if I'm coming off rude here.

I was being SARCASTIC when I made the remark that his cheating never occurred if we go with the logic that we find out later the previous seasons were merely a book Roseanne was writing. Well, I am not going with that logic. I am sticking with the episodes as I saw them, not what the season ending told us to believe.

I am going with the fact that as each episode aired we see Dan change, obviously because of the changes in Roseanne Barr's behavior and personal life. Dan DID CHEAT ON ROSEANNE because that is what we are shown. When we were shown that, we had no idea abt the "book writing" crap. So, going with that logic, all the aforementioned things that Dan did to Roseanne was mean, stupid and cruel. So, I am not being a hyprocrite nor am I contradicting what I initially posted and continue to stick with.
