Wasn't there an episode late in the show's run where Tommy gets busted for DUI? It looked like he lost most of his hair, and Alice was crying. Did that episode really happen or has it been a figment of my imagination for 20 years?

There was an episode in the 8th or 9th season where Tommy had a drinking problem in college and shaves his head, freaking Alice out.

It was a 9th season episode, about halfway thru the season.
