"American Idol" shifts into yet another phase tonight - a painful phase for die-hard viewers.

We're down to the final four (three, after tonight's results show) and this year, more than ever, the eliminations are hard to watch.

This is the first time in "Idol" history that everyone in the top four has a shot at stealing the competition. There hasn't been this competitive a final slate, with as many wild-card factors and distinct personalities, since ... well, ever.

Chris Daughtry got the ax on this night last season, and Tamyra Gray back in season one.

This year's Final Four doesn't have a weak link. LaKisha Jones, Jordin Sparks, Blake Lewis, Melinda Doolittle - whoever loses, it'll be a real loss.

This year's finalists have proven especially adept not only at singing, but in honing and presenting distinctive personalities. "American Idol" viewers have come to care more deeply than usual about the individual trajectories and backstage stories, making this season the toughest to handicap.

No matter your opinion of last night's performances - they did Bee Gees songs - the unknown factors in the voting at this point include whether text-crazy teen girls will vote for Jordin (who's only 17) or Blake (the only guy left, and good-looking at that), and whether LaKisha and Melinda will split the vote from fans of the more soulful approach.

Age versus youth, male versus female, black versus white - the potential dividing lines make "Survivor" look like one big happy family.

All of which will make tonight's show, and all other editions until the finale, tense as well as fun to watch.

There's no more fat to trim. People aren't voting for Sanjaya Malakar's hair anymore, or Haley Scarnato's legs. For the first time at this stage of "Idol," it's a four-way talent contest.

Personally, I'm rooting for Blake. And Melinda. And ...

I still think Blake and LaKisha are overrated, but that's just me

I think Phil and Gina, or even Stephanie or Chris Sligh should still be on there.
