Default 25 cents

Was 25 cents really something for Alice to quit over??-lol She found out the new guy was making $2.60 an hour and they were making $2.35 and Alice was Bitching? I mean It wasn't fair but he wasn't dolng that much better FINANCIALLY than them for Alice to Quit. Now if he was making $4.75 an Hour than I can see all the UPROAR but not for 25 cents. Plus she wasn't supposed to be discussing another employee's pay with the Boss. and on top of that, she didn't know that you don't get unemployment when you QUIT-lol Damm Alice was acting like VERA in this ep, i mean if you could get unemployment when you QUIT you know how many people would be LEAVING JOBS??? Alice said she didn't KNOW THAT?-lol Irene where are you Girl?

Here I am.

You are right on the money. It wasn't worth it one bit. I haven't seen the episode tonight yet, but I know the episode. And it was stupid to think that even if Alice could get unemployment, it doesn't pay you nearly enough. Unemployment is the pits as far as $$$ is concerned. It was better to hold one's tongue abt .25 cents rather than cut your salary by 1/3 if you got unemployment. But in this case, Alice can't even get that. How dumb was that? VERA DUMB.

Also, it was dumb of Mel to hire ANOTHER waiter person when the diner is so damn small. Yes it gets busy, but NOT THAT BUSY.

It was the principle of the matter. That is straight up sexism and that is good that she did speak up because if one lets it slide it sets up a predecess of what more a person can do.

It was sexism and Mel could have been in trouble. He made it clear that it was because the waiter was A MAN. Alice should have pursued it another way, however, it was apparent that Alice wouldn't go that route.

But it was still not so damn busy that Mel needed another waiter/waitress. Ridiculous.

I agree with the above post but i think you have take a look at the $ value too. $.25 in 1977 is different in 2007.

I grew up in that era. It (.25) was not worth losing one's job.

I was going to post that as well, but, I missed the part when the girls discussed what Alice was going to say to Mel (or was it cut out?). I had to step away from the television at the point when Alice found out what that man made, so I don't know what occurred or if it was edited out.

Alice than reminds Flo at her apartment how Vera and Flo "made" Alice the spokesperson for all three of them. And how they egged her on to speak up and say whatever she had to say to Mel to correct the situation.

From what I can remember:

A candy bar.
7 more pieces of Dubble Bubble than today.
Egads, a quarter could buy a pop of any kind out of a pop machine - either a can or a bottle.
Heck, I think I'll stop now before this gets off-topic.

Those above mentioned items are not worth fighting over a job you may lose or quit over.

I highly doubt Alice wanted to buy a candy bar. I think she wanted to pay bills.

25 cents though each week adds up to a little extra. It might not be much, but it is still more.

Good one Sol.

Yeah, I guess it was worth quitting your one and only means of support to buy your kid that candy bar so he can get cavities and then on top of trying to figure out how to pay for the orthodontist for braces, Alice will have to figure out how to pay that dentist bill.
