Default Amen an underrated show

Unfortunately the show did not do well in syndication. It is a great show with a good cast and great writing. Sherman Hemsley is funny in the show and not too often you would find the star of a sitcom funny but he is. It was a great TV comeback for Clifton Davis after being out of the limelight for so many years. The sisters was hilarious together but when Barbara Montgomery left the series Roz Ryan was not quite the same on the show. Jester Hairston was outstanding and the lines was so funny. Good to see someone at the age he was at to be in a great show.

The one who was one of the greatest comedienne's was Anna Maria Horsfield who played Thelma. She was over the top and the African American version of Lucy in her days of I Love Lucy. She was funny and had me screaming when she opened her mouth. She nailed Thelma Frye down to a science.

Amen fell into that trap of being an 1980's themed show. If you noticed, after 1993 it was hard to find many 80's sitcoms in syndication. While the show was more humorous than others, I think it just got prejudged by many program directors as dated 80's style comedy.

I would love to see a DVD release of the show; and you would think it would be considered given how well The Jeffersons did.

It was an OK show but I would say UNDERRATED. I just didn;t like when the show involved the TWO SISTERS or RUEBEN. I was more enterained by ernest, Riley, and Thelma. i recorded this show when it was onTV ONE but I don't think it's worth buying on DVD

The first four seasons, the show was hot. The fifth season is typical for black sitcom; very forgettable and thrown together. I would only buy seasons 1-4 on DVD; for me to buy the Bumper Robinson years, it better be some extras on there for me to add it to my collection.

It was a good ensemble show. Clifton Davis' character, Pastor Reuben Gregory, was the voice of reason while everyone else was getting the laughs. Clifton did not get as many laughs as the others. But it was a core cast who seemed to work well together and enjoyed each other. But there were reports that Barbara Montgomery was not happy on the show she felt as though she did not belong there.

We could have done without her to be totally honest. They could have made her a reoccuring character who still could have been Amelia's sister. I don't think Barbara ever had any storylines that evolved around her character.

Amelia's Sister was the Weakest character

I enjoyed the show, but it did get stale during the last season.

It was not as good as the previous seasons. Thelma and Reuben's wedding should had been the series finale.

I guess this was the time where shows had to get to 100 for syndication. I think by the last season everyone was ready to move on. Sherman didn't do any stunts that season either.

It seemed like they were all going through the motions in the last season. There WERE several high points, such as "Club Maniac", Thelma and Amelia's fight on the cooking show, and several guest appearances by Ron Glass. I agree that Thelma and Reuben's wedding should have been the series finale.
