Dog attack victim recounts ordeal

The woman who was viciously attacked by two guard dogs in Vanscoy, Sask., two weeks ago says she fought back as best she could while she waited for help to arrive.

"I know at one point, I had my finger in one of their eyes and he was whining but he wouldn't let go of my forearm," said Jackie Derdall, who talked about her ordeal Monday with CBC News.

Derdall, a 41-year-old nurse, is out of the hospital after three surgeries to repair injuries to her arms and legs.

She said while out for a morning jog on April 10, she passed by Sid's Auto Service and saw two dogs come out of a ditch toward her.

"I stopped running and they just basically attacked," she said.

One dog attacked her from behind. She dialed 911 on her cellphone, but the attack continued and her phone went flying. Derdall ended up in the ditch with both dogs biting her.

"I knew I just had to fight, keep fighting," she said. "I was biting back. I was doing anything I could do."

The dogs managed to pull off her coat as the struggle continued in the icy ditch water.

An RCMP car arrived and an officer chased the dogs off.

Derdall ended up with deep wounds and needed three operations to clean them and suture her skin back together.

She spent 11 days in Saskatoon's St. Paul's Hospital — the same hospital where she works as an operating room nurse — before getting home on Saturday.

A day after the attack, RCMP shot the two dogs. They had escaped from a nearby business compound and were discovered in a field on the Derdalls' property.

There has not been a decision on whether to charge the business owner in connection with the dog attack.

Derdall said she doesn't have nightmares, but when she saw a loose dog in her back yard recently, it caused her some concern.

She said she's safe at home but feels if she starts jogging again, she may carry Mace.

"From now on, I think I'll be a little more cautious," she said.
Vanscoy is 27 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon.

They should charge the owner of the dogs, these stupid owners need to take some responsibilities for their dogs.
