I know I might be the only person who actually agress with Thelma for turning down the Alison School For Girls Scholarship............ Yes, the sorority(ies) were backwards racist(Picking up minorities so they themselves look good), but it seems the Allison School itself, not just the sororities knew this was going on and did nothing to stop it. Thelma would have felt uncomfortable going to a school that allowed backwards racism in its sorority(ies)............... She could have thought, "What's to stop me from thinking I got the scholarship to the school just because I'm Black?" That's a very uncomfortable thought..........................And, in reference to James saying that she was getting a free scholarship to Allison School, so she should take it, NO!................Thelma had good grades, so it wasn't as if she was so destitiute she HAD to take that scholarship........... Lots of higher learning schools would have gladly given her a scholarship because she got all good grdaes............................

Good points, but if you get a scholarship to a great school, you take advantage of it. An opportunity like that, may not come back around again.

I see Janice point, also in the 60's and 70's some white people weren't to keen on having black kids attend an all white school. And being the token black isn't a great feeling. If Thelma would have applied to different schools I’m sure that she would have gotten a scholarship to a wonderful school.

I recently read a news story abt a university that had a sorority that was degrading its obese members, and also, picking only those members that were "trim" and so forth. The university looked into this matter and denounced it. They basically said they had no idea that this was occurring (mind you this is 2007) and were not told abt it until many of the girls brought it to their attention.
Had Thelma gone to the college anyhow, she could have been the one to start the ball rolling abt the discrimination that was occurring within the sororities. It takes one person to start something. Thelma dropped the ball on this one. A free education is a free education. |

I think that if Thelma would have gone there with a friend or a group of girls, then I can see her going. But going there alone at that period of time, I don't know. I know I wouldn't have gone. She was a smart girl she had other opinions.
Maybe in the final episode of Good Times they should have had Thelma going off to another state or country to teach other children or moving away and getting a high paying job instead of getting pregnant. I think that would have been a better ending. |

Take the frigging education.
For your families sake No dignity giving up an opportunity that will keep you in the ghetto. after all affirmative action is much the same and one would think the Evans would have no problem with that. |

Who says you HAVE to join a sorority/fraternity in college, anyway? Take the free education - they don't come along everyday.

Well, Thelma's point was she didn't want to be part of a college that would ALLOW such sororities to exist on campus. Which is why I posted above how most colleges don't know what goes on behind closed doors as far as sororities and fraternities are concerned. Sure, they should be on top of those associations, however, with all the hazing going on and other stupid antics they do, sounds like they do all they can to NOT LET THE COLLEGES know what they are doing "behind closed doors." Thelma was stupid. She could have gone to college for free and stop worrying abt what some sorority was doing. And if it bugged her that much, she can still go to school and let the college know what occurred.
