Red face Baldwin makes TV apology, consults with Dr. Phil

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Alec Baldwin will apologize to his daughter on national television on Friday for calling her a "thoughtless little pig," according to excerpts from a pre-taped ABC interview released on Thursday.

Appearing on "The View" for his first TV interview since he left a ranting voice-mail message to his 11-year-old daughter that was made public last week on the Internet, Baldwin also said he was ready to give up acting after nearly 30 years.

Baldwin, embroiled in a bitter, six-year custody dispute with his ex-wife, actress Kim Basinger, said he wanted to lobby for reforms in divorce, parental visitation and custody laws.

"I would like to devote myself to the cause of parental alienation," the 49-year-old star said on "The View" airing on Friday. He added that he was finishing work on a book about divorce that is due for publication in September.

Baldwin said he has asked the NBC network to let him quit his co-starring role as an egoistic TV executive on the popular sitcom "30 Rock."

But the network indicated it would not let Baldwin out of his contract. "We look forward to having him continue his role in the show," NBC said. The network already had renewed the series for a second season.

Meanwhile, television therapist Dr. Phil McGraw revealed that Baldwin had called him for advice on Thursday and that the two had a "far-reaching, intense conversation" about the actor's daughter and his former spouse.

McGraw, who offered on the CNN talk show "Larry King Live" to counsel the family, said Baldwin had given him permission to disclose that they had talked and that he also had "reached out privately" to Basinger.

Baldwin drew a storm of media attention and public outrage last week when the celebrity Web site TMZ.com posted a recording of a phone message he recently left for his daughter, Ireland, berating her as a "rude, thoughtless little pig."

In the voice mail, Baldwin said he was furious at not being able to reach her for a prearranged phone conversation.

"Obviously, calling your child a pig or anything else is improper and inappropriate, and I apologize to my daughter for that," Baldwin said. "There's nothing wrong with being frustrated or angry ... I took it out on the wrong person."

A Los Angeles family law judge who listened to the tape suspended Baldwin's visitation rights last week and set a hearing for May 4, at which time Baldwin could face further restrictions on his contact with the child.

A separate court hearing was set for June 5 on how the voice-mail tape was released to the media.

I think it's terrible that this family's dirty laundry is even aired. This should have been kept between them. If Kim Basinger did leak it, or even play it for anyone, then she's a huge bitch.

Exclamation

Obviously, Alec, Kim and Ireland need to be in family counselling... it's a crying shame that the two adults in this situation seem intent on using their eleven-year-old daughter as a pawn in their dirty war games... Ireland will need therapy for life to recover from this dysfunction junction...

You can't unring a bell, and some bells ring louder than others. I think this is going to stick like glue to Baldwin, no matter how he tries to spin it. His daughter will most likely forgive him. What Baldwin has done however, is to reveal his true self to the world, and is it ever ugly.

That was perfectly said, Janice. I agree with you 100%.

at least he apologized. i doubt he really meant what he said, he was obviously just mad at the time and said stuff he shouldn't. his family's crap shouldn't have been revealed anyway.

I don't think their family issues should be out there either. As for what Baldwin said, he crossed a line. Those are not normal anger words. I know that my father never called me anything remotely close to a thoughtless pig when I was 11 years old, or any age for that matter. I can say the same for my friend's fathers too.

Baldwin has anger management issues. It was cited as one of the reasons for his divorce. He was verbally abusive towards his wife. Now we know that he's verbally abusive towards his daughter. That was, without a doubt, verbal abuse...and I doubt it's the first time it's happened.

I think he needs to get help for his anger issues before he does anything. He seriously needs help. He should get help for his own sake, and for his daughter's sake.

Of course he is going to apologize, if he didn't, it would make him a bigger a$$ than he already is. This is the day and age of apologies. Look how many celebs in the last year have had to make them.

This is a private issue in that family. They need counseling. So be it Alec is an a$$ and has anger management issues, no one needs to chide him in the public eye. Save that stuff for the courts and mediation. If Kim leaked this tape, she is not doing a good job at dealing with this problem. When one parent in a divorce/custody issue is behaving irrationally, then the other parent needs to step up to the plate and show better judgment and handle the issues/problems as they arise in a decent, mature fashion.

Everyone needs to mind their own business. We don't know the circumstances or anything that's really going on. I think it's crap what he said to his daughter...but I know from experience that when you get frustrated and angry enough you say the most stupid things you can come up with. I think that's what happened here. I don't think he's a bad guy but obviously has anger management issues. Again, that's what causes bull**** like this to go on. My dad has some serious anger management issues but he won't admit to it so my family's a miserable pile of crap. At least Alec admits it and I hope for the best for him and his daughter because I know it's probably difficult. I'm glad he's trying to get help.

ps, that doesn't mean I don't think that Kim Jong Il thing is funny as hell. I love that movie.
