I understand that Don died in 1975, but as a wife and a mother, shouldn't she have known better to take care of her taxes???

Back in the 70's the husband was usually the one who took care of the finances & the taxes. So alot of women didn't have a clue about this stuff.

The tax man was dealing with taxes that Don supposedly owed (we find out he doesn't) from the last year that Don was alive. Isn't that right?

That was correct, but as a wife, she should've been more aware especially since her husband died.

Then it sounds plausible that Alice wouldn't have had any inkling abt the taxes. She never worked, she didn't have taxes to do until the FOLLOWING year. She never expected this tax issue regarding her dead husband to come up.

Yes, but considering Don had died, I would think she would at least look into it.

True. It sounds like Don died before he had the taxes done for the year. I mean, if Don did the taxes, surely Alice would have proof of that to show the tax guy.

It also sounds like Don never had to pay any taxes before, since Alice was so shocked to hear that Don owed the IRS any money, so really, it was to her benefit to look into it and see if he was owed a refund.
