Did You Know: Warner Bros spent over $5 million on just one of the scenes in I Am Legend. According to IGN, the scene was shot on location over the course of six nights in January, with the cooperation of 14 government agencies including The National Guard, the Coast Guard, and the Department of Defense, a crew of 250, and a cast of 1,000 extras. A massive lighting system was rigged up along the bridge and the waterfront to illuminate the nighttime set. The film will become the biggest movie to ever be filmed from start to finish in New York City. But nobody said shooting in the Big Apple was cheap. The film’s projected budget is $150+ million.

April 25, 2007 - At $150 million, Will Smith's I Am Legend will probably be the most expensive vampire flick ever filmed. While the high price tag can be pegged on everything from the cost of A-list talent like Smith to the movie's extensive special effects, one scene in particular has cost the producers a bundle.
Yahoo! has an interesting look at that one sequence, which takes place on New York City's Brooklyn Bridge during a large-scale evacuation to escape the spreading vampire-zombie plague. The filmmakers chose to film this scene on location over the course of six nights in January, costing a minimum of $5 million, the cooperation of 14 government agencies, a crew of 250, and a cast of 1,000 extras. The National Guard, the Coast Guard, and the Department of Defense all contributed men and or equipment to the scene, while a massive lighting system was rigged up along the bridge and the waterfront to illuminate the nighttime set. The number of permits required and the red tape that had to be excised in the post-9/11 political climate was described as nothing less than a "Sisyphean" task. Nevertheless, the scene was pulled off, and the New York mayor's office is trumpeting I Am Legend as the biggest picture ever to be made from start to finish in the Big Apple. I Am Legend, starring Will Smith and Salli Richardson, is due out in theaters this December. |

Sadly, 150 mil is pretty cheap for a big screen blockbuster these days.
