...instead of 911 when the lady was giving birth in the episode, 'The Failure?' Instead of a toll free call in 911 she used a dime to call the hospital itself. I think some of those writers were eating the chili themselves. LOL

Was 911 implemented back then? I remember having to dial 0 when we needed to call for an emergency. Why didn't Alice dial zero? hmmmm...good question.

She did dial 0 first you are right, but she still used a dime.

Another thing, why didn't they just use the back room phone? there was a phone shown in the backroom a few times, why use a PAYPHONE for an emergency?

They didn't start showing the backroom until the 2nd season. Presumably there wasn't one, as Mel's Office was on the same wall as the bathroom (the room marked "Private"). From the 2nd season on, that door was one of the bathrooms, and the "backroom" was behind the kitchen.

Even so, I would think the man who owns his own business have a phone that he can make calls with. He would need a phone to make orders for restaurant equipment, food stuff, coffee stuff, etc. That's what restaurants do in the morning before they open, they arrive early to check inventory, make orders, etc.

Alice probably felt it was best to make the call in Walter's presence, to try and gain his trust more and see that she keeps her word.

Actually, there's a scene that ION must have cut out (BIG surprise-lol). Walter ordered Vera to CUT the wires to the phone in Mel's office and bring it to him I believe.
