Why do you think the Jeffersons always had more Viewers than Good Times in the 70's? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

From the Time the Jeffersons premeired on CBS in 75, it always had better ratings than Good Times until Good Times went off the air.

Good Times-#26

Could it be because Good Times was just Show with Ongoing Depressing Situations with no Sight of any Upturn?

In my opinion, The Jeffersons had a more of a white appeal. Mainstream america probably couldn't relate to the struggles of inner-city blacks.

Well Sanford and Son was in the poor section of LA focused on a Father and Son struggling to make the Numbers look Right-lol So how do you explain that?

What are the ratings for Sanford and Son? Or actually, where did it rank during its run?

Wow, the show really plummeted in its last season didn't it?

I think S&S was more of a guy show, regardless of race. I know my brother and his friends would watch it. Even in reruns, my brother always watched it. I know many of the episodes but it's a show I could pass on when flipping the channels.

S&S didn't seem like a show abt "struggling"...it was more geared at making people laugh.

Good Times dealt with more struggles than Sanford and Son, Sanford and Son like Irene said dealt with comedy.

Yeah, it did have a guy appeal, but my two older sisters loved the show and can't get enough of it.

I don't think it hurt that it was a spinoff from All in the Family, which (needless to say) was hugely successful.

That said, I always preferred the Jeffersons over Good Times myself, although I like both shows.

okay i don't want to start problems but I Think Because The Jeffersons were More Rich and The Evan were Poor and in a way because the Evans were were a struggling family and The Jeffersons were the opposite and had a white appeal and it wasn't like it was depressing or sad, it had a different verity unlike Norman Lears other shows.

It had nothing to do with WHITE APPEAL, wasn't sanford and son a successful show with all black cast members based n the GHETTO??

Both shows aired back to back in the 76-77 season, Jeffersons ranked #24 and Good Times #26

I do think that had a lot to do with it. For most of the time The Jeffersons aired as part of a successful comedy block. When it was moved away from that block their ratings suffered too. Good Times aired opposite Happy Days one year and The Bionic Woman and Eight Is Enough the next 2. I barely watched Good Times in it's original run because of that. That was the only Norman Lear Show I didn't watch every week. Very few people had VCR's back then. Once it went into syndication in the early 80's I would watch it every day after school.
