Default The Odd Couple - The First Season (CBS DVD Version) DVD Review

On November 13th, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence. That request came from his wife. Deep down, he knew she was right, but he also knew someday he would return to her. With nowhere else to go, he appeared at the home of his childhood friend, Oscar Madison. Sometime earlier, Madison's wife had thrown him out, requesting that he never return. Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?

The majority of sitcom fans know this intro by heart, and anyone who's ever seen this show knows the answer is an absolute no. If they'd shared the apartment without incident, one of the quintessential 70s sitcoms * and a wonderful stage show and movie * would have never occurred. The show stars Jack Klugman as Oscar Madison, and Tony Randall as Felix Unger. The two are complete personality opposites * Felix is the stereotypical neat freak, while Oscar is anything but.

The first season was released from Time-Life late last year, so now CBS DVD is re-releasing it with different packaging and a bonus disc with bonus episodes.

I wish they would have included on this set; footage of the episode of PASSWORD that Jack and Tony appeared on, shortly after the episode aired with Oscar and Felix on it.

That episode - and pretty much the entirety of the early 1970s version of Password - is either destroyed, or otherwise locked up tight in the archives of the Library of Congress and/or the Museum of TV and Radio.

If they'd found and included that - which would have meant licensing the rights for that episode for distribution - I would have considered giving the set 5/5 even if the video on the main DVD set were upside down. (Consideration and reality of course are still two different things)

Picked mine up on Wednesday. I am glad I waited and didn't get the Time Life one. I got it on sale at Circuit City too.

It wasn't anything major. I got it for $27.00, still better than $40 though.

Ain't it the truth. I figured that, Circuit City's sales are never that major (although they are selling the ALF and TBB season sets for only 19.99 each, which is baffling to me considering the LP's are about 39.99 for each). Most of the major retailers are now selling it for around that general price range.

I am very happy the Odd Couple is finally made it to DVD. maybe i'll try to pick it up in the next few days. I certainly hope they follow up quickly with the other seasons.

Don't get me wrong, I like the first season, but I think when the show switched to a live audience format, the show really hit its stride.

I've got to get a copy, too. I haven't seen the episodes uncut since the local syndication station in the 1970s.

Definately worth grabbing. I got mine at WM for $28 yesterday and have been enjoying it quite a bit. I watched 4 episodes last night. Poor Oscar, I would have killed Felix in about 30 seconds. BTW that was one of my favorite episodes that I watched last night called "Felix is Missing" where they think Oscar has murdered him. LMFAO

Does anyone know the price of the Time Life DVD -- just wondering what the difference is for the bonus disc. Thanks.
