In a recent interview, producer Avi Arad, was asked how this Hulk would be different from the previous Hulk incarnation from Ang Lee and this is what he said, "It’s a new Hulk, new direction, new size, new color, new attitude. Anything that was done before is not in this movie. It’s a very different kind of Hulk. It’s more of a love story, it’s more of a heroic Hulk. It’s a kind of Hulk we loved in the show, so it’s kind of more influenced by the show than anything else. It’s very human, very touching, and huge action.”

In the comic books, the Hulk has been depicted in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes, depending on the storyline.

True, but it was part of a storyline that ended with him turning back to his green color.

When the Hulk was created for the comic books, he was originally intended to be gray. However, the production people could see that a consistent shade of gray could not be achieved in the comics at that time. So they switched to green in time for his first appearance. Source: "Origins of Marvel Comics" by Stan Lee.

He was always depicted as green for decades, until modern comics writers and artists decided to try some gray versions -- being aware of the anecdote I've related regarding his color.

Actually I think he was all gray in his first comic book. It was either that or he was gray on the cover only. And the story I rememeber was that the colorist got the color wrong for that first book. It's been a while so I may have my story wrong.

I just pulled out my Origins of Marvel Comics and he's just gray on the cover of his first comic. And from reading it a bit the actual printing of the 1st comic did have him with gray skin through out the story. The reprint in Origins has him in green just because that is the way most think of him as.

Producer Avi Arad confirmed the following to Empire Magazine:

“It was a joke! Here’s what it was. There were 30 people around a table, and they said ‘is there going to be a grey Hulk?’ And I was thinking about it and I said, ‘who knows?’ It was one of those moments. I had just got back from Japan and I was trying to talk about Spider-Man and this guy was pushing me on The Hulk so I thought I’ll be coy. I don’t know what colour it is, and all of a sudden it’s headline news.”
