The Jeffersons are the longest Running Black Show with 11 Seasons And Family Matters are the longest running black Show with 9 seasons and are beaten by The Jeffersons for 2 years, anyway my question is do you think they could have went for 12 years and Outlasted the Jeffersons by one season and take the number 1 spot for the longest running Black Show?

No, it couldn't have and I am going to tell you why. This show should have wrapped it up by 1993. After that, they ran out of ideas and put too much Urkel/Stephan in our faces. Plus, after that year, he was getting too tall and there is so much you can do with a character like that.

I agree after 1994, the show started getting old. More Urkel characters, less focus on actual Window Family "matters." The problem with Family Matters is that their core audience was growing up but they weren't. They would at times try to deal with serious issues but you couldn't help but to laugh at them as they would do the "afterschool special" thing.

I actually think Family Matters COULD have lasted longer than The Jeffersons.
Sure the plots and character development was a little shaky later on, but I liked the last season a lot. I think a 10th season would have been great. Laura and Steve would be engaged, 3J and Richie (though very annoying) would have probably started High School, Eddie would be a cop, Carl and Harriet would be, well, Carl and Harriet, and would renew their vows, and maybe get a family dog-LOL, Judy would mysteriously come down from her bedroom, where people would hardly recognize her (like Becky #1 on Roseanne)...Steve and Laura could have moved into a place of their own (making for some interesting and funny stories), Maxine could have been added as a regular (with Michelle Thomas having to leave the show), giving her a boyfriend, and a new friend or 2 for her, Laura, and Steve to hang out with. They would also have a hangout (probably a diner), and jobs. Seasons 11 and 12 would be cut down to 13 episodes each, dealing with the normal whacky, and sometimes emotional Family Matters stuff. Eddie takes a transfer somewhere (writing him out of the show, due to his lack of storylines, and the crowded cast), Rachel comes back with a 3 part story arc, with the news that she got married!, causing problems between Harriet and her, and Richie and her (things get resolved, and Richie FINALLY moves away with her and the new step-father), Judy goes through the stress of being a college freshman, while Laura, Maxine, Steve, and their friends graduate. The series ends with the long awaited marriage of Laura and Steve. These are just some of my random ideas to keep the show going for a little longer....With a more grown-up feel to it (like how Boy Meets World became, causing them move the show to 9pm), and the addition of new characters, the show could have stayed somewhat fresh for a while. |

No, it really couldn't have. This show did last too long. 1994 was it. That's when I stopped watching all the time. 1994-1996 the latest. When Mother Winslow Re-married I watched, but it was going downhill at that time. I forget what season/year that was.

FM could definitely not have outlasted the Jeffersons. Yes, both had very funny casts, but the Jeffersons had more depth and better story lines. I'll take George over Urkel anyday!

I think it could have if it didn't change that much. Season 5+ would have been very different. No Urkel inventions, Judy would never have left, Rachel would be on it, just to establish she still exists, and Mother Winslow wouldn't have gotten married.

Heck no after 1994 the show was moving in a different direction that did not focus so much on family issues more like Urkel issues and some of the plots were just plain bad, dont get me wrong I was in my late teens watching this show and admired some of the issues they covered but the writing started to tank and week after week the situation comedy was turning into satire comedy. This show could have surpassed the Jeffersons as longest running black comedy if the writng would have been more consistent .
