If Good Times wanted to shock us, it should have been Thelma who went into the gambling business to earn money for the rent. Could you imagaine the shock responses of the audiences and viewers?
Thelma was seen as the good girl, so seeing her being a bookie would have really been a big thing............... J.J. being a bookie in the gambling business seemed appropriate because J.J. proved to be willing to do anything for money in earlier seasins. But Thelma being a bookie? That would have been SOMETHING! Florida finding out Thelma was a bookie would have been earth-shattering and groundbreaking!

They could have done things to Thelma's character to make her more shocking and rebellious. I don't recall right now any episode really where Thelma showed any rebellion in her. Maybe where see was going to marry the African prince and he wanted to have several wifes because of his culture. Can anyone else think of more episode where she rebells?

Thelma was good to look at, but honestly that's about it- her character was the least developed of any of the core players. What was she studying in college and did she ever finish? Once Keith shows up she is basically just seen as being his wife it's as if she had no identity or aspirations of her own.

Okay, here's a shocker for you. What if if the episode "Thelma's Young Man", Donald was actually a WHITE GUY!
WHOOOO, now THAT would have been the shocker to end all shockers! |

They could've had a storyline where Thelma moved in with Ebe and he was involved in criminal activity, but Thelma didn't care since she loved him

I just posted on another thread that there is a university that had no idea that a sorority on their campus was picking its members based on "their weight"; this was just last year. The college didn't know until it was brought to their attention. The same thing could have been going on with the college Thelma wanted to attend. Colleges aren't always aware of what is going on in the sororities/fraternities...until it is too late sometimes. |
