Default Exact Words (aka "Greg Gets Grounded")

I don't know about anyone else, but to me this is one of the funniest episodes ever. I especially like the way Greg is constantly lying and digging himself into deeper and deeper holes. All because of his love for rock and roll.

Here are three little moments from the episode that I always get a kick out of. I imagine that most people could watch the ep ten times and never even notice.

1. When he is lying and telling his parents he thought it would be okay to drive his friend's car while he was grounded. His parents ask if he really took their words that way, and his response was, "All I know is what you told me."

2. Later that night when Greg appeals to his parents again in their bedroom and they give in to his request, his father says, "Your mother and I both believe that you understood exactly what we meant." They show a brief shot of Greg looking down guiltily.

3. When he calls his date to cancel the concert because he had promised to take his brothers to the frog jumping contest, you hear those three words from the date's point of view, funnelled through her telephone. I suppose it was to make it sound even more embarrassing.

One thing I could not stand about this episode was his parents' firm stand against him, especially his mother. They were so intolerant and angry over his reckless (but harmless) teenage ways.

It's reckless and HARMFUL to drive and not keep your eyes on the road. It only takes a second to slam into a car that may have stopped in front of you. Why would anyone say it was harmless?

Greg is guilty and he knows it. He was trying to play dumb, like most teenagers do when they want things their way and they are punished.

I have seen this episode so many times since the first time it aired in the 70's and there is nothing that has gotten by me.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Greg was a surfer (dude). He had great reflexes for unexpected events during driving.

Some people, on the other hand, are so uptight they easily get into accidents.

I'd rather ride with a GOOD driver who may break a few safety rules occasionally, than an uptight driver who always obeys the rules.

When your reading an album cover as I believe greg was when he was driving, you can't watch the road at the same time unless you have eyes on your elbows

Exactly. Eyes off the road is considered NEGLIGENT.

This is also one of my favorite episodes. It's one of the few that seem "real," when Carol and Mike are angry at Greg, and they ground him, and Greg's frustration when he stormed out of the room....seemed more like a real family than traditional Brady Bunch happy-happy stuff.

By the way, to this day my younger brother will still get in my face and say "those weren't your exact words!"

Your right this one did seem real and the other one was when jan was nominated most popular girl in school and she made all those promises she decided not to keep, I liked that one too because its real, its how alot of elected officials do things.

Did anyone else catch the reference to Calaveras Country where the frog jumping contest was taking place?

Mark Twain wrote a short story called "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County".

No,

Where is the reference in that episode? I do not even recall such a place mentioned.

In the backyard Bobby is telling Peter about the frog jumping contest. Peter says, "You mean the one in Calaveras county?" and Bobby says, "Yes."

Oh, I don't know about that... he sure slammed into that pylon pretty hard "The Driver's Seat". The egg came crashing down!

(He would have been better off if they stopped the film just before he hit it, as they did with Marcia!)

But Greg Gets Grounded is definitely one of my favorite episodes of the series as well!

In addition to those, my favorite scenes were where Greg's "exact words" were not quite what he had bargained for. I always LMAO when he's out on the driveway in his bathrobe washing the car (because he said he'd do it TODAY), then he gets sprayed while trying to fix the nozzle on the hose. Then after that, he says goodnight to Carol, who informed him that he was supposed to wash the dishes for Marcia TONIGHT ("and TONIGHT has exactly 15 minutes left!"), then gets yet another "shower" at the kitchen sink!

I agree that the part where Greg storms out of the den is more realistic than "Bradyish."

One of my favorite parts is when Bobby is putting the frogs outside the box trying to find Herman (I think), the best jumper of the frogs he got at the pond. By the looks on Chris's and Mikes faces they really were losing control of them.
