True about both, but there's more. We need to include The Cosby Show, Family Matters and if you include cartoon shows, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. Let's expand that list, for all time's sake.

I'd have to say, without a doubt, it has to be "The Cosby Show".
There is a good reason why you see it on TV Land, TBS, and other stations at least 4 times a day. It literally changed the entire TV industry, and saved the sitcom as well when that genre was going into a terrible decline in the early 80s, very similiar to what is happening today. I think one reason for this is that the Huxtables didn't see themselves as a typical TV "Black" family, with all of the stereotypical mannerisms, language, music, and behaviour that goes with it. They were just trying to be a normal family that anyone---black, white, or whatever---can relate to and they succeeded brilliantly. Bill Cosby himself gets much of the credit for this because he wanted very much to put together a show that you can watch with your own family and not be ashamed of what you're watching. Yes, he did make a few mistakes along the way (Goodbye Lisa Bonet, Hello Raven!) but overall, the product was outstanding, and the show's influence can still be felt today. That's something which you can't say about "Good Times", "The Jeffersons", or "Sanford and Son", as good as they were, and which I also loved back then. |

The Jeffersons was definitely good back in its day, but the show has not aged very well. First of all, this is today, ad today, we don't go around being a bigot about anyone we see walking on the street. Looking back on the show, George Jefferson was really something that not one person is today. Sure, the show changed America . . . unlike other black sitcoms on in the day, it showed the African Americans can be rich if they just work towards their goal.
But then, in the mid-80's, The Cosby Show came around, and it showed that America was chaning even more. Black families up to this point cannot only be wealthy, but can also be a loving, caring, wholesome family, and that is why people watched the show so much. Cosby didn't want his show to be about black people being a minority, like it was in the Jeffersons. He wanted to show how African Americans were just as much family as anyone else. The 70's was probably the most influential, scandalous, controversial era of television, and people watched shows like All in the Family, The Jeffersons, and Three's Company for that reason. But when we get to the time of around 1984/1985, television had changed. Family shows like The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Who's the Boss, Growing Pains, and Full house made their way onto television, and people tuned in to see wholesome families, which is why the ratings for Three's Company and The Jeffersons had declined so much in their final seasons, around 1984. No one wanted to see George Jefferson call Tom Willis a honkey anymore, or criticize Florence for being a lazy maid. Now, back to the question, I would have to say that Neither The Jeffersons nor Sanford and Son were the best African American shows of all time. The Cosby Show was definitely better than the two, because it was a lot more funny, and good enough to watch with my family and kids each week. Family Matters was another good show that could do exactly the same thing. The Jeffersons was good in its day, but people were sick and tired of watching the same thing week after week. |
