I think that's the Casie Nicole segment, which happened off the coast of Georgia in 1990. The name of the sole survivor was Nathan Neesmith. He found a large styrofoam box that popped out from underneath the overturned Casie Nicole, and survived in it until being rescued days later.

There's another UM case with some similarities, a boat called the Sara Jo that was lost in the Pacific. But there were no known survivors and the phone call aspect fits the Casie Nicole case, not the Sara Jo. That boat was eventually found maybe a decade later thousands of miles away on a remote island, and also a possible grave of one of the sailors. But I'm confident the Casie Nicole case is the one you are describing.
