What do you think made GAB successful? I've heard some people say that Nell made the show a success. However, I don't think that the show's success was because of Nell by herself. I think that the chemistry between Nell and the Chief and their weekly battle of parental wits, as well as the chemistry with the cast as a whole played a key role in the success of GAB. I think that when Dolph Sweet passed away, much of the shows energy and success went with him, because the show's ratings declined after his passing. That's just my humble opinion.

I think GAB was a success because it showed the challenge of growing up. They look at it in a humorus way. The show was well written. I remember a funny line where Katie was going out and the Chief said something like "you're not wearing those jeans, are you?" Katie say "Dad, they're not jeans, they're Sergio Valente's".. The Chief, so dry asked "what are you doing in some guy's jeans?" I don't think that was the exact phrases, but you get the idea. The Chief, no matter how rough he be, always had a soft spot and kind heart. His character had to deal with the loss of his wife.
Nell, was the driving force. The motherly character, friend and essentially the glue that kept it all from falling about. She was about balance in a house that lost it when the mother died. The girls needed Nell and she helped shape them into young women. I think when Chief died the show lost much of its premise. But, the girls were almost all grown up at the time and it wouldn't have made too much of sense if the Chief was still trying to rule with an iron hand. So, I think it was the full circle of events that made the show special. |
