Default Colds caused by viruses...I don't think so

How many times have we been told that you can only catch a cold from a virus? I don't believe that. I truly believe that being in the soaking rain or being outdoors with wet hair can cause a cold.

Once I went to run a quick errand to the post office with my hair somewhat wet. I didn't have time to dry it, I had to go. The next day, I was SICK! I never go out without drying my hair now. I have gotten sick also when I was in high school and all of a sudden it started raining HARD. I had no choice but to walk home. My feet got all wet, my socks, my clothes, everything. That evening, I had a scratchy throat and got real sick. I was home for three days.

What do you all think?

I think so too. Cool & rainny weather seem to increase your chances of getting a cold. My late granny believed it too.

Your body becomes more susceptible to germs and viruses when you're wet and cold. The wetness and coldness isn't what's making you sick, it's just making it easier for you to get sick.

Exactly. Sometimes being cold and wet acctivates the symptoms of a cold virus that you already have but it is still the virus that is making you sick.

^^ Exactly. Your immune system takes a hit when your body has to try to warm you up, and being wet makes the coldness worse.

Right. When you're wet and cold, it lowers your body's resistance to fight cold viruses.

I believe that you catch cold from germs, Rain and cold weather has nothing to do with it. If people caught a cold from being in the rain and cold for periods of time. Then just about every person in Seattle and London would be sick for the rest of their lives. A cold is nothing but a virus that we catch from one of other, either by not washing hand and then touching our eyes, nose or mouth. Or by airborne particles that leaves ones mouth when we cough or sneeze.

But some people get caught off guard. No one carries an umbrella with them 24/7.

Here where I live it hardly rains. There are times when it does rain, it is totally unexpected.

What abt a person who is leaving work and has no car, uses the bus or subway, they have no choice but to walk and they didn't expect it to rain? An umbrella is not always available.

That's true. I couldn't understand anyone who leaves their home without an umbrella if it is pouring buckets. The only reason would be they don't have an umbrella or it is broken. Then again, maybe laziness is the factor.

More like stupidity if you ask me. Even if it's not pouring raining. If people watch the news or grab the weather forecast off the web, makes sense to throw an umbrella in your bag or briefcase. They fold up real small.

I keep an umbrella in each of my cars. Of course, with less than 3" of rain for the whole season so far (last July 1 to current), I haven't used it much this year.

Neither have I. I mean, rain in Southern California?
