They allowed Thelma to get engaged while she was 17, but they didn't want J.J. marrying Diana while he was 18 or 19....... It's obvious they thought Thelma was more mature than J.J.

I think that because at that time, the man was still seen as breadwinner of the household. J.J. at 18 could not support a wife and therefore they did not approve of the engagment. With Thelma, they see it as a way for her to leave the ghetto and move to a better area.

They didn't allow Thelma to be engaged at 17. They both had a fit, especially when they found out who she was engaged to. They never gave their blessing.
