Sad Selena- 12 years

Tejano Singer. A Hispanic singing idol, she was murdered at age 23 at the Days Inn, Room 158, in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was the Grammy winning queen of Tejano music and sold more than 1.5 million records. Born in Lake Jackson, Texas, her father, Abraham Quintanilla, was a respected Latino musician who played with a group called Los Dinos. By the time she was ten years old, Selena would join Los Dinos, singing with the group. Although English was her native language, she sang almost exclusively in Spanish, in a Tex-Mex pop style called Tejano. Selena came to national attention in 1987, when she won Female Vocalist of the Year at the annual Tejano Music Awards. Two years later, she and her band were signed to EMI Latin Records, releasing their first album in 1990. Between 1990 and 1994, Selena became a major force in Latin music, although she was virtually unknown to English speaking American audiences. Her first national exposure came in the film "Don Juan DeMarco" (released in 1995), in which she played a singer. In 1994, she won a Grammy Award for her album "Live," and the following year, was nominated for a Grammy for her song "Amor Prohibito" (Forbidden Love). She began to make an English-language pop album, "Dreaming of You," to appeal to more English-speaking Americans, which was released after her death. Selena was killed by Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her fan club and manager of the singer's chain of beauty salons and boutiques. Selena believed that Saldivar had stolen over $30,000 from her businesses, and when Selena confronted her in her motel room, Saldivar shot her once in the back; Selena made it to the motel lobby, where she collapsed, naming Saldivar as her assailant, but died shortly afterwards from blood loss. The Latino community mourned her as a Mexican-American Elvis, and her records had steadily climbed in popularity since her death. She was buried three years and a day after her wedding to guitarist Chris Perez. On October 23, 1995, Yolanda Saldivar was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Yolanda will be eligible for parole in October 2025

I remember that day so well. I was a freshman in high school, and my grandmother was in the last stages of the cancer that would take her away a little over a month later. Several days after Selena's funeral came the Oklahoma City bombing. It was a time of turmoil for me at home, school and the nation at large.

I own 2 Selena CD compilations and the DVD of the movie starring Jennifer Lopez. Selena was a tremendous talent and was on the brink of mainstream stardom. She had such a bright future...had she lived, who knows how many other strides she would've made in her career, and she and Chris would've started their own family by now.

Sad, sad story...but at least we still have the music to remember her by.

Yeah, Selena's death at such a young age was a terrible tragedy. Even though I never saw the Jennifer Lopez bio-movie on Selena I did buy the soundtrack. I bought it because I really liked that song that was such a big hit for Selena right after she was murdered. I don't remember what it is called though. I haven't heard the song on the radio in a while and I haven't listened to the soundtrack CD in probably eight years.

Well, I don't even know what to say anymore. I don't think there really is anything to say, for me anyway. I've been a Selena fan for so long and it saddens me that she isn't here anymore but there are only so many ways to express such an emotion. I'm just happy that her memory is being kept alive by her family and her fans. Here we are, twelve years later still talking about her. That's really something...

So sad to think what Selena would have gone on to do with her life and with her career had she not been gunned down so brutally and in such a senseless fashion...

It's hard to believe it's been 12 years. I remember where I was when I heard about it. So young, beautiful and talented. Her life snuffed out by a nutcase. Everytime I hear one of her songs, I think of what was never to be. It's beyond sad.

What makes the story even more sad is the nutcase you mentioned was her friend. They trusted her.
So sad she had to die
she could've became the greatest singer of all time had she had not died.
