This is the coach of the Pakistan cricket team who recently got murdered. So far it is unsolved but investigators believe that it is someone who knew him.
Any theories on this case? -Ben |

This is a case I've been following very closely. I've played and managed cricket teams and I've watched just about every game of the World Cup (it's been a slow time at work
)Pakistani cricket is corrupt--everybody in the sport knows that. It's run by a Board that's appointed by and answers to the Prime Minister, who himself is a military strongman, so there's not much democracy there. There are also heavy allegations of match-fixing and betting on games. It's known that bookies from India and Pakistan are close to key figures in the sport. The corruption goes all the way through the sport. Bob Woolmer, the Pakistani coach, was for all intents and purposes the only foreigner in the setup. Now I've played cricket with a lot of people from India and Pakistan and the word I would use to describe them is "insular." They didn't like talking to me or other non-subcontinentals if they could get away with it. It's pretty well established that Woolmer was an outsider on his own team. It's also been pretty well established that Woolmer was a fall guy for the shortcomings of the team. The Pakistani captain, Inzamam-ul-Haq, was the #1 guy and controlled the team...Woolmer was only able to give advice here and there. But every time the team failed, Woolmer was blamed. What I think happened, in that kind of environment, is that someone lost a lot of money when Pakistan unexpectedly lost to Ireland. I watched part of that game and I don't think Pakistan lost on purpose...Ireland is a better team than people think and Pakistan just played a bad game. Woolmer was getting blamed for everything, so.... The bookies are capable of just about anything, they're involved in illegal activity in a military dictatorship, so you know they wouldn't be above this kind of thing. What I'm afraid of is that the murderers have already made their way back to Pakistan. The Jamaican police authorities have really been taking their time. They should have had CCTV pictures available already--instead they've just started looking at them. |
