Well We Made It!

I just wanted to say that we finally got all 97 episodes of "NewsRadio" on DVD. This is a dream come true.

NewsRadio: The Complete First & Second Seasons (May 24th, 2005)
NewsRadio: The Complete Third Season (February 28th, 2006)
NewsRadio: The Complete Fourth Season (June 20th, 2006)
NewsRadio: The Complete Fifth Season (March 20th, 2007)

There were only two errors in the four sets. "Injury" was the edited version (not syndicated, but "cleaned up" for NBC). And "Bill Moves On" is missing a scene in which Matthew is telling Lisa that he wants his ashes in his desk drawer. That scene aired first on NBC, but was cut out from subsequent repeats. However, A&E brought it back. So I have it on tape, but I wish I had it on the DVD. Other than those two episodes, the rest of the shows are uncut.

There have been 50 commentaries over the course of five seasons.

It didn't do well on N@N, but I'd imagine it's okay on TBS. But even if it's not, and it never returns to TV again (which would be truely sad) at least we'll have all the episodes on DVD to watch forever.

It's also kind of sad. Because I'll never get on tvshowsondvd.com and read "Another NewsRadio Season Is Coming to DVD," because there are no more seasons. So it's great to have the show complete, but then there's the sadness to know that it's really over.

Look at this way, you'll never have to record or stay up to watch the edited versions of the show at 2:00 in the morning just so that you can finally see the show.

I'm thrilled to have at least one of my favorite shows ever completely on DVD!

Well my five favorite sitcoms are:

NewsRadio
Wings
Ellen
Taxi
Boy Meets World

That's two out of five that are complete. Wings is going along, so far so good. Season 4 (out of 8) is coming in May. As for Taxi and Boy Meets World, their fate doesn't look that great. Taxi might be pushed back due to music rights. I know there's a whole episode with the Billy Joel song "Vienna Waits" playing. I wonder if that's what's holding things up. And Boy Meets World, it's been said that they've abandoned it. But who knows, eventually they may decide to go back to it. If one of the actors becomes big, they'll probably want to release another season or two of BMW. I think that it was Tony Shalhoub and Thomas Haden Church's recent fame that led to Paramount finally releasing "Wings" on DVD.

Just a little rundown on my NewsRadio rerun history...

I had watched the first couple seasons on NBC, when they first aired. When the first four seasons came to local syndication, I started taping it. The episodes are the versions that both N@N and TBS air, where they cut out the theme song. But whenever it would storm or some kind of weather problem, the channel would always have a weather alert during the show and have a little map in the corner of the screen. That made it hard to tape the episodes.

When the show came to A&E, because they used different edited versions, I taped them all again. I liked coming home from work, and watching an hour of "NewsRadio." But it didn't last long enough.

Then there was a year or two with the show completely gone from reruns. Luckily, the DVDs started coming around that time.

I got all of Newradio now. yipee!
Wings, as you said, is coming along. I think the release of Wings is more due to Tony Shalhoub's success on "Monk". I mean, they put him on the cover of the First/Second season box and he wasn't even a major player on the show during those seasons.
Night Court. They released a short 13 episode season one. The problem was this show didn't hit it's stride until season 3 and they didn't market the DVD release at all. They've discontinued any new releases for now. Luckily, I taped most of the them when it ran on TV Land. however they were edited versions with quite a bit cut out.
Head of the Class. One of my childhood favorites. I recently watched some episodes on In2TV and discovered that I still love this show but it will probably never be on DVD.

It certainly is. And it only took about two years!

I never understood why the unedited version of "Injury" wasn't included on the complete second or third season sets. It's not that big a deal though but it would have been nice to see the unedited version. I was going to record "Injury" when it aired on TBS a few weeks ago thinking the part that wasn't on the dvds was left uncut on the TBS version but then I forgot all about it. I'll have to record it next time it airs.

I never knew about that part in "Bill Moves On" though. I'll have to record that episode too next time TBS airs it. Hopefully that part is in the TBS version.

You never know, they could always come out with a Complete box set with a bunch of extras that weren't on the season sets (I know, that's probably wishful thinking).

-The 30 second or so opening scene to the sixth season. Paul Simms said they shot the opening scene where Dave and Matthew leave WNYX. That way, if they were renewed, they wouldn't have to put the WNYX set back up just for one scene.
-Interviews with the Cast. I loved the commentaries, but I really want to SEE the cast members today, talking about the show.
-Any other Short Films they have. They used all of the One-Man NewsRadios. But if they have any other kinds of short films, include those as well.
-And anything else they could add to this set.

I've always wanted to see that Pop Up version of "Our Fiftieth Episode". Unfortunately, I didn't start watching Newsradio till after the 4th season had already ended so I never got to see that episode and they never aired the Pop Up version in syndication either.

I remember that Conan episode. It was so funny. Dave had his beard and bleached blonde hair then and he told Conan that he was going to have to shave the beard and change his hair so he could start shooting the sixth season of "NewsRadio." Conan told him that "NewsRadio" was cancelled and Dave left the chair went down the hall and fired his driver. He came back in, sat back down and said to the audience "End of Bit."

I used to have an interview from Dave Foley by Tom Schneider on tape. It was early in the second season. He was talking about how NewsRadio is kind of like the old Newhart show.

As for the Pop-Up episode, I've never seen it myself. I watched the show when it first aired from the very first episode, up until it's move to Wednesday. And then I got back into it at the beginning of the fifth season.

One thing I'm very happy about, is that the cast is proud of the show. I think it's one of the best shows ever made, and I'm glad that they think it's a great show too. I also liked how they all came to do the commentaries. Heck, we even got NBC President (at the time) Warren Littlefield. And though I never liked him, I have to give him credit. He never did cancel the show. It got cancelled after he left NBC.

That would be awesome if they did that. I would love to see the "Pop up" episdoe again. Now I wish I had kept that tape with it on.
