My Schedules for Two Cable Networks

Here are two 50s and 60s sitcom networks I would love to see. If someone could write up a 50s and 60s dramas/sci-fi schedules on this thread, that would be great. More variety. Let's dedicate four or five channels to the golden era of television. I've done the sitcoms, you do the other genres. Or at least tell me what you think of these lineups. And they are guaranteed not to go into other decades. We will change the schedule from time to time to include other shows from the decade, but we'll never become N@N and/or TV Land.

Just a note, I made it good for the Lucy fans. They can watch an hour of "The Lucy Show" on the 1960s Network and then flip over to the 1950s Network and watch an hour of "I Love Lucy."

Don't forget "The Jack Benny Program" for the 1950's and "Here's Lucy" for the 1960's. For the drama side, definately add "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Twilight Zone", "Outer Limits", "Perry Mason". Boy if such a channel existed I would snatch it up so fast my tv would be on fire. This would keep me happy for years to come.

An all 1950's cable channel and all 1960's cable channel would be a dream come true for many of us.

One thing I might tweak in your lineup is the repeating of every episode twice in a one hour block. While that might be OK for some shows, some series might have only had 70 or 80 episodes in their entire run. If two episodes were broadcast every day, seven days a week, that would be 14 episodes in a week. That would be 60 episodes in a 30 day month. Many shows would go through their entire run in less than two months.

I seem to remember back in the 1980's, one cable channel I watched (was it Nick at Nite in their pre TV Land days?) would have one set of programs on Monday-Wednesday-Friday, and another set of programs on Tuesday-Thursday.

That way, they did not go through an entire series so fast, and it allowed them to show more variety (what a NOVEL idea!). Series which did not have as many total episodes could be shown in the Tuesday-Thursday group.

If just one episode of a program were broadcast a day, instead of two, that would make room for 48 different programs a day, not just 24 programs with two episodes a day.

Back in the 'golden era' (1980's) of cable, nobody broadcast a one hour block of a half hour sitcom. I guess it's cheaper for stations to do it that way. We viewers get shortchanged in the end, however.

I also think there ought to be room to fit in the schedule lesser seen shows from each decade. There are lots of shows from both decades that have never been rebroadcast (such as 'Beulah' from the 1950's) or shows rarely rebroadcast in the following decades.

The sitcoms online boards cover the Top 25 or so shows from each decade, and we all have our favorites from each era that we never tire of. But there is always another sitcom which is right now unknown or unfamiliar to me and you and which we might like if we ever got the chance to see them.

I have a 1950s DVD with an episode of "Beulah" and "Life with Elizabeth" among a few others. My concern is how many of those shows are complete? I mean, out of the 78 episodes produced of "Amos 'N' Andy" only like 71 still exist today. Same for "Mister Peepers." Not all of the episodes have survived through out the years.

I wish the people back then were smarter and filmed the shows and saved them. I'd love to see shows like "Mary Kay and Johnny" (the very first sitcom!) and "The Aldrich Family" and "The Goldbergs" (as far as I know, only the final season has been saved for syndication). It's sad knowing I'll never get to see those shows.

As for the hour blocks, I guess I agree with you. Look at the list of sixties shows I had planned on including, but couldn't because I ran out of time, lol. I just figured that people like to sit down and watch more than just one episode of a certain show. But I do get your point.

No I've never seen either but would love to. However with "The Goldbergs" I'd rather see one of the earlier episodes with Philip Loeb playing the husband. I've heard that those episodes don't exist anymore. I guess I just assumed that there were no surviving episodes of "The Aldrich Family" anymore. That's great that you've seen an episode. Is it any good? I love reading about these old sitcoms, but have seen only a few.

That might be it. I can't think of any others I've seen. I'm 25 years old and none of the people I know that are my age have seen even half of these shows. In fact, there was a discussion in the breakroom, and this guy who's in his early forties seriously thought TV came around in the late 1950s! Don't worry, I set him straight. I said that the first sitcom came along in 1947. Still, how could someone be so dumb, lol.

This isn't counting shows I've seen like Dennis the Menace, Donna Reed and Dobie Gillis which began in the late fifties but are considered to be sixties sitcoms. This was a list of fifties sitcoms.

I've also seen (and own on DVD) the pilot episode to the Three Stooges series "Jerks of all Trades" from 1949. The show never went past the pilot, however.
