I'm looking at the ACT website and I need some advice. When is the best time to take the test.
I'm a sophmore, is that too soon?
What's the difference between SAT and ACT??
If I take them more than once, will the college I'm planning to attend see my highest scores?
How much does it cost to take them?

I need serious help.

Most people take the ACTs/SATs in their junior year, just before they start their college search. I think I took mine in the summer before junior year. From what I remember, the ACTs is a more regional test (midwest), the SAT is more of a national test. From my personal experience, the ACT was a lot easier than the SAT.

You can have your best score sent, but they really don't recommend retaking it, because your score will never change that much. I took both tests, but I think I only submitted my ACT score, because I was applying to a Michigan school, and they didn't require the SAT (and my ACT was higher anyway). But this was back in 2000. Things may have changed since. Hope that was some help

Thanks! I heard that it gets easier each time you take it, so your score might improve.

There was actually a kid at my highschool who retook the SAT and his score improved so much that the SAT called and put his scores on hold. They wouldn't accept a dramatic improvement because it's evidence of fowl play.

I took mine April of my junior year because that's when it was being offed at my school. I didn't feel like taking it at some school I'd never been in.

I took it twice, but I got the same score both times.

I did send my higher science score to my second college though because I wanted to try meteorology. I think in that case I could have sent either one.

I took the ACT twice--april of my junior year and june that summer. Though my scores on the individual tests flucuated, my overall remained the same. And since the score was decent, I decided not to retake it.

Go to your guidence office, too. They can give you sample books and all. And more scholarship information.

A good key to scholarships--even if they seem small, still apply because a lot of people overlook the small ones, and that makes less competition for them. And they add up quickly.

Many schools/universities offer scholarships, too, so you may want to contact the admissions office of the schools you are looking into.

I don't think they had too many back in 97/98. Man, that makes me feel old. lol So I never used one. Sorry.

You were lucky. They didn't offer it at my school. I'm still not sure which highschool I ended up taking it in, but I remember feeling pretty uncomfortable over there. Didn't know anyone and wasn't in a sociable mood that day, ya know?

With regards to which test to take, check out the requirements for colleges that you are interested in. Most will probably be fine with the SAT, but you'll want to check to be sure. And some will take either, so you could take the ACT, but then only send the scores if they are better than the SAT scores. I ended up taking the ACT because one school I was looking at required the SAT plus either 3 SAT II's OR the ACT, and the SAT II's kinda scared me. And yes, colleges should see your highest score. Cost info should be available on the collegeboard site. Feel free to PM me if you have any more q's... I went through this whole stressful college thing fairly recently, and I'd be happy to help.
