Steroid probe will reveal names to NFL, MLB - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

ALBANY, New York (Reuters) - A prosecutor from New York plans to tell major U.S. professional sports leagues which of their players are tied to his investigation of a suspected ring selling steroids over the Internet.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares met officials from the National Football League and Major League Baseball last week and will provide names as his probe advances, a spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Soares alleges the ring involves doctors at nine Internet-based companies in Florida, New York, Texas and Alabama who prescribed steroids and human growth hormone without meeting patients, providing at least $40 million worth of performance-enhancing drugs to tens of thousands of people.

Twenty suspects have been indicted.

"He will be releasing the names to the respective leagues as soon as they have finished going through the evidence," said Heather Orth, a Soares spokeswoman. "The expectation is that they will go to the leagues within a week or two."

Soares has said his criminal investigation is focused on the suspected doctors, pharmacists and distributors of steroids and human growth hormone.

He will not prosecute customers, who include professional athletes and celebrities seeking anti-aging remedies.

While the football and baseball players face potential suspensions for the use of banned steroids, such sanctions are normally imposed only after a player tests positive for having drugs in his body.

One of the players named by news media as having received a shipment, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Gary Matthews Jr., on Wednesday denied he used human growth hormone.

Matthews had been under pressure from his team to make a public statement. The Angels signed him to a $50 million contract before his name surfaced.

Two weeks ago, police raided the Signature Pharmacy in Orlando, Florida, and arrested its founders, who now face felony charges including diversion of prescription medication and sale of a controlled substance.

Soares said a variety of sports figures have been identified as buyers but no names have been released yet.

The case is in Albany because authorities say $250,000 worth of steroids were sold in Albany County.

It's about time MLB and NFL officials stop looking the other way. Hopefully this will start things in the right direction.

I heard a pittsburg steelers trainer or doctor was one of the people's name that came up.
When will athletes realize that steriods don't pay off in the long run, all steriod's do is F*ck you up and yet they still continue. tsk tsk
