Default The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour

Hi,

I was just wanting to know what everyones favorite LDCH was and why. Mine is the Ricardos go to Japan. I love the scene in the geisha(sp) house and does the dance and songs and she doesn't know japanese so she has to make something up! I fall in the floor EVERY time. I also had a question. when the LDCH was release years back, in the different color boxes,(each show was in a differ color box: The celeb. next door was green, Ricardos go to japan is blue, Lucy makes room for Danny is red, etc) Does anyone know why eps 13 Lucy meets the Mustache was never released. I was told it was because Ernie Kovacks had rights to it? Does that sound right?

The one where Lucy and Ethel have all those eggs hidden on them and then
Ricky wants to rehearse a dance number and he pulls her to him and all those
eggs get crushed. That is a favorite.

The 13th episode was released in a Collector's Box from Columbia House. I inquired about it to the Lucy-Desi Center a few years ago and they had very little in stock at a very high price $35!

The 'Lucy Does the Tango' is not part of the Comedy-Hours it's a Conneticut last season episode.

My favorite is 'Lucy takes a cruise to Havana' because there she 'meets' Ricky for the first time.

My favoite is the uranium hunting in Las Vegas episode. Seeing Fred McMurray riding on the Mertz's bumper was my seond memory of watching television. My first was wathing Dinah Shore sing! Funny, my parents one told me that when I was a baby I loved watching Amerian Bandstand, but I don't remember that at all.

I've always been partial to the Danny Thomas episode myself. From about "Lucy's Summer Vacation" on to the end if I don't see those episodes, my feelings aren't hurt. Probably my least favorite episode of all the ILL format episodes would be the one in Japan. But when the set comes out I'll have another look at it - I may enjoy it this time!

I think what hurts the final few episodes is that there wasn't a studio audience. If there had been, then possibly they would have played better. Just my opinion.

They used a studio audience for only a few scenes of the last few "Lucy-Desi Hours." But for the most part, the series did not use a studio audience because of the major on-the-set tension between Lucille and Desi (their marriage had been coming to the end). During the filming of the last two episodes of "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour", Lucy and Desi were not speaking at all. The day after the filming of "Lucy Meets the Moustache" had been completed, Lucille filed for divorce from Desi.

Soon after this occured, Keith Thibodeaux (who played Little Ricky on the "I Love Lucy"/"Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" series), was sent on the "Dinah Shore Chevy Show" to announce to the world that there would no longer be any "Lucy-Desi" episodes because of the personal problems between Lucille and Desi.

After the series and Lucy and Desi's marriage had ended, it was widely expected that Lucille's TV career had also ended for good.

However, when Desilu Productions was in trouble (they did not have many highly rated shows on the air), Lucille was persuaded to returned to television in what was planned to be a one-season series, "The Lucy Show", in 1962.

She fooled everyone when "The Lucy Show" became an instant and extremely successful hit -- lasted six seasons of 156 episodes, never even dropping out of the Top 10 of the Nielsen ratings. The series ended in the spring of 1968.

Lucy became even more iconic, and returned to television once again in 1968 with "Here's Lucy" (my favorite of the "Lucy" series), which was also very successful, and lasted six seasons of 144 episodes.

Up until that point, all of Lucille's series had been on CBS, and she surely made a helluva lot of money for them during her 23 consecutive years of creating hit sitcoms on their network.

My favorite is the one where they go to Mexico and the stowaway child hides in their car trunk! That's a very funny episode. Michael

Default "the Lucy-desi Comedy Hour"...

...if I might remind you, is the title CBS gave to the 13 hour-long episodes when they began repeating them in the summer of 1962, and that's the title they stuck with when those shows went into syndication in 1967. The official title of the "specials" was "THE LUCILLE BALL-DESI ARNAZ SHOW" [during the last two seasons, it was 'THE WESTINGHOUSE LUCILLE BALL-DESI ARNAZ SHOW", because it alternated with "WESTINGHOUSE DESILU PLAYHOUSE" about once a month].

As for me, I liked the first one, "Lucy Takes A Cruise To Havana", and "Lucy Makes Room For Danny" (which was probably the best of the 13).

Season 7-9 Lucy fans beware....
On the 1st disc - episode #2 - The Celebrity Next Door there is a crucial scene missing at 24:04. This scene is right after Fred & Ethel collide with the pie. The missing scene is Miss Bankhead tells Lucy that she is allergic to strawberries. Now this scene appears on the We Love Lucy specials from the early 90's. Funny thing is this episode is severly edited when it appears on that special. Here it is suppose to be uncut/unedited & here - the most crucial scene setting up the main gag at the end of the episode - is missing. We know the scene exists - but where did it go? Please contact Paramount to get the scene put back in for either a replacement disc or for the future complete I Love Lucy set. Thank you!!
