I really enjoyed the show - Lou, Joe, and Cliff. Lou has got to be one the best and most complex characters ever on a sitcom. I remember a young Yeardly Smith as Lou's daughter - she was classic. The show was in late night syndication in several "blue state" cities. But even then a number of the topics were too "sensitive" and the show was heavily edited. Showtime has produced a number of quality, progressive series aimed at socially conscious urban audiences. Showtime had a lot of success with them: It's Gary Shandling, Stargate SG1, Odyssey 5, Farscape, and later with QAF, the L Word and Weeds, and Street Time. Ultimately, each of these shows had a statement to make.

Brothers was a great show. Brandon Maggart was hilarious as older brother Lou and Phillip Charles Mackenzie was priceless as Donald. Donald was the first gay character I'd seen that was not one-noted. He was definely flamboyant but also a man of substance. Smart, witty, successful and a great guide for newly out brother Cliff. The show may be tame for today but back then they covered timely issues with class and humor.
