...the 1965-'66 season was a "different" one, and not just because the series had moved to CBS. Because Don DeFore & Whitney Blake's contracts were not renewed, Screen Gems/Columbia hoped that Ray Fulmer & Lynn Borden would "fill the gap", and that viewers would accept whatever "Baxter" family Hazel lived with. And they did, thanks to Shirley Booth's popularity and the fact that "THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW" provided a strong lead-in that season. But Shirley's health began to falter, and she was off camera a bit more as the season drew to a close. They might have been a sixth season, but she decided to "retire" for a while, and leave it at just five...which was exactly how long HER contract with SG/C was.
