I'm pretty sure "fish go'n fry" and "beans go'n burn" NOT "don't" fry nor "don't" burn.

"Go'n" is short for "are going to". It's a good thing to have fish to fry and beans to burn. ("Burn" means "to cook", by the way.) "Don't" just don't make no sense, 'tho I'm go'n admit it sounds like they're singing a one-syllable word if you do'n listen close.

I was involved in a strange debate last week about the lyrics to the Jefferson's. Myself and a group of my friends, all having migrated from west of the Mississippi to NYC, thought the beginning of the song went "Well we're moving on up, to the top" and not "to the east side." We were all asked to sing the song separately, without hearing the others' responses. So my question, are we all nuts or was their a modification to the lyrics for west coasters (really not knowing what the "east side" meant)?

I remember hearing both "top" and "east side". I think I thought it was one of those, and then realized later that I hadn't heard it right originally.

It's amazing how several different people can hear the same song, and hear different lyrics. If the lyrics aren't clear, and you think you know what they're saying, that version of the song sticks with you.
