Have any of you seen The Departed? Although the movie is generally a work of fiction, the character Frank Costello (played by Jack Nicholson) was modelled after fugitive James "Whitey" Bulger (who, of course, was profiled on UM in 1996). The movie was filmed in Boston.

I've seen The Departed. It is one of the best films and truly deserves its Oscar in my opinion. Congrats Scorsese, One of your best works since Michael Jackson's Bad music video.

I meant to acknowledge that I have seen The Departed. I went to see it at a movie theater this past New Year's Eve. It's a great movie, and I'm glad it won some Oscar awards (including Best Director and Best Picture).

Admittedly, however, I don't blame the relatives of Whitey Bulger's victims for being outraged about the film. Although Whitey Bulger was the model for the Jack Nicholson character (and that there are similarities between the story and actual events involving Bulger), The Departed is by no means an actual depiction of the Bulger case. It is generally a work of fiction.

Boston radio talk show host Howie Carr deserves a lot of credit for helping to keep the Bulger case in the public eye. Last year, he published the book The Brothers Bulger, and was interviewed on numerous shows. Carr expressed his belief that Whitey Bulger will be caught.

I too believe that Bulger will be captured sooner or later. It's just a question of time.
