Default The very thing that kicked start a singer / actor's career...

ROBIN WILLIAMS: Good Morning Vietnam. Yes, I know he was made a star with Mork on Happy Days and Mork and Mindy, but the very thing that started his movie career was this movie.

MADONNA: Her single LIKE A VIRGIN. It was this song that really put her name out there. It was also the name of her first multi-platinum album.

JENNIFER LOPEZ: Her being cast to play SELENA, the slain Tejano music singer. Although she was a Fly Girl on In Living Color, her acting career took off after her performance in this movie.

BETTE MIDLER: She was a back-up singer who was cast in the movie THE ROSE. A performance for which she was nominated for an Oscar. This started her career as a bona fide actress in dramas/comedies.

JOHN TRAVOLTA: His starring role in Saturday Night Fever, a career move that made him a mega star.

Jennifer Hudson was previously known as an early American Idol contestant, but not until she was cast in Dreamgirls did her career really take off. Of course, she now has an Oscar to prove it.

Remember the 1996 movie Emma? Starring Gwyneth Paltrow? The supporting cast was mostly made up of young actors who weren't very well known yet: Toni Collette, Jeremy Northam, Ewan MacGregor, Alan Cumming.

Michael J. Fox - Family Ties

Christopher Lloyd - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest/Taxi. His first film role was in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but it could be argued that Taxi kick-started his career.

River Phoenix - probably Stand By Me (1986), although his first film was Explorers (1985) and he'd done some TV work before that.

I will say that TAXI is what got Christopher very well known.

I could be wrong, but I think the scandal with Vanessa Williams and the Miss America pageant actually helped her career in the long run. It gave her name recognition. If that hadn't happened, she may have ended up being just a former beauty queen.

I believe you are right. Sometimes bad publicity is good publicity.

Let's not forget the American Idol winners who have that show to thank for their careers.
