DO I HEAR A VAULTS? - and some other thoughts - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I don't mean to nitpick but I noticed that this episode runs one minute shorter than all the other episodes on the Season 5 set. I know after Season 3 they ceased to have the tags at the end of the shows but it seems like it runs shorter than any of the other episodes.

Any thoughts?

Also...was there a time when Get Smart ran on TV Land sped up? Meaning...the show was complete but it was sped up to allow enough time for commercials. They did that with Batman when it was run on a local station here in Chicago back in the 90s

There's too many moments in Get Smart that don't sound quite right either. Dialogue referring to moments that seems like it should have been shown.
I know for a fact "The Adventures of Superman" release is cut. I remember a scene in the first episode where a young Clark at school suddenly looks through a rock trying to locate a ball. I remember thinking how cool that would have been. Sadly it's been excised so I only have an old fading memory of it.
I'm have a similar recollection of a Gilligan's Island scene where Mary Ann teaches the robot a song to help him wash clothes.
I'm of a firm belief that we're not getting the shows as they were originally shown.
Shows like M*A*SH and Alf that have snaps of the episode in their end titles are the easiest to spot when they're shown on TV but the others can get away with a lot more.

That is the only one that easily comes to mind with Get Smart. It runs a minute shorter than all the other episodes listed for season 5 (I verified this against the review on this very site). What others are you talking about? I'd be interested to know.

All of the episodes of MASH are complete with the exception of "Our Finest Hour". However, Fox was very cool about noting that on the DVD release that it is in fact a syndication print and can be watched either as one whole hour or in two separate parts. Since its a 'best of' episode, I don't seem to mind it as much and admire them for their honesty. I guess the negative of the show no longer exists which surprises me since its a fairly recent show (I'm an old movie buff so Im a little more forgiving when a print isn't as sharp as could be...better than nothing IMO). Then again I have to remember that its still 30 years ago. I'm 37 and my negatives don't exist anymore either.

With M*A*S*H and Alf I was referring to the TV versions. I've got the first 3 seasons of M*A*S*H on DVD and it's great to see it uncut.
One example of Get Smart is when in Spy, Spy Birdie Seigfried mentions a funny little man in red ear muffs speaking to him, I seem to recall, many moons ago, that scene. I can see him giving Phister the brush off as only he could.

As far as I know, DO I HEAR A VAULTS is uncut on the DVD. The story goes, the script for this episode ran a little short, but they were at the tail end of the series so they just let the ep wrap up at a little over 23 minutes. DO I HEAR A VAULTS also utilizes stock footage from an earlier episode. I believe that is the only Get Smart episode that does this.

All the episodes on the Time-Life DVD's are supposed to be uncut. There are a few scattered episodes here and there that have a little shorter than normal running time, but I guess that's just how they made em. Other episodes on the DVD's that run about a minute shorter than normal are: KISS OF DEATH, THE WAX MAX, and SPY SPY BIRDIE.

When Get Smart was run on Nick At Nite, there were times the episodes were sped up. It wasn't really noticeable during the actual episodes, but you could clearly tell by the music during the opening and closing credits. The music sounded like it was going too fast. Nick At Nite sped up the episodes and they chopped em up as well. I am very glad the Time-Life DVD's came out. Now everyone can see Get Smart in full the way it's supposed to be seen. I just wish they had put the episodes on the discs in production date order instead of by airdate.

I'm the first to admit I'm a little paranoid about the term uncut because I'm so sure they are cut. I'm not just referring to Get Smart here. Nearly all the 60's stuff would be because of the lack of commercials back then meaning actual running times would be longer. Running times on DVD's mean nothing to me because of the ease of it being adjusted. IE: the episodes being slowed down to run 25 odd minutes. For some reason it appears the company's don't want us to have originally broadcast episodes.
Another example I just watched was The Impossible Mission. I know it may be a memory thing but does anyone else have recollections of the scene with the computerised trumpet being longer. I'm sure Max accidentally mentions at least 2 other songs that start the trumpet playing and Dr. Simon explaining to Max how to turn the trumpet off.

Thanks for clearing that up Lee! I don't recall that story at all.

Im confident the other episodes are all uncut. This one just jumped out at me...don't ask me why but I appreciate the clarification.

I don't know about the specific scenes that are called out above. I do know myself and my memory tends to misplace scenes and lines all the time so unless I have something to compare it to, I can't always say for certain.

I don't really think a company has anything to gain the consumer by deliberatly altering material. Most of the time when I've seen this done its been because someone is careless and/or ingorant, not going out of the way to pull a fast.

So some episodes were sped up eh. Interesting. Same thing on Batman, they really hauled a** to the Commisioners office in the sped up versions.

I remember watching Snoopy Smart vs. the Red Baron last time seeing it on tv and thinking what a terrible job they did of blocking the airline logo on the seats. I was hoping the DVD's would be the original scenes minus the blanking out or if the copywright prob was still there, they'd have done a better job of it. Alas no.

You are correct. On the DVD, the logo on the backs of the airline seats has been blocked out in the opening scene of SNOOPY SMART VS THE RED BARON. The logos should read TWA. You can see a glimpse of the logo on back of the Chief's seat. So this is one episode alteration that can be confirmed. Thumbs down to Time-Life for that one.

It's not like TWA would be getting some free advertisement, they don't even exist anymore. I believe American airlines bought them out.

And I couldn't help noticing the hot blonde sitting next to Max on the plane. Mercy, does she have a rack!

So THAT'S why Max wasn't sitting beside 99 on that plane!
